Kipp Boucher signed to Opus Kink-founded label Hideous Mink Records (Opus Kink, Alien Chicks, Fake Turins, Black Bordello). Teaming up with the rising label for the first time, the Brighton-based songwriter share’s the newest cut ‘America’, from the upcoming E.P ‘Joy of Life
‘I’m living out my life like I’m American / I’ve found myself a dream that I’m willing to make my life a living hell for’
The opening line of Kipp Boucher’s America, out 22nd September, limns a familiar feeling for the inhabitants of a world seemingly shrinking; as the digital age hurtles into terminal velocity, the involuntarily of the - arguably trivial - cultural Americanisation acts as a changeable metaphor for the more sinister things forced upon us by modern life. Taken from the upcoming EP Joy of Life (recorded at Farm Road Studios), the track strikes a balance between paying tribute and taking umbrage with everything that has influenced Boucher’s psyche along the way. Produced by Jake Smallwood with eerily triumphant orchestration by Milo McKinnon, the song starts simply, cascading into a dramatic wall of sound by the end.
‘The first lyrical ideas for this song were born during the democratic primaries in the states back in 2020; I remember quite avidly following them and having a moment where I thought how wild it is that I was paying so much attention to something that I would barely give a shit about in any other country bar my own. The American dream propaganda has been sort of drip-fed to my generation since we were children, through TV etc. I remember my dad used to complain when I dropped Americanisms and it would annoy me because it was like ‘what am I meant to do? Everything on TV is American’ and I guess I’ve started to find there’s a kind of futility and overwhelming anxiety to people just being forced to culturally change. Not that I’ve undergone some great hardship here, but I found the topic fascinating and almost directly portable to many other problems in the old brain and it kind of lyrically snowballed from there.’
America is the second single from Joy of Life, following the title track. The full EP arrives on the 3rd of November via Hideous Mink Records.
