Deep moments of catharsis often produce transformative work, and this is certainly the case with the debut EP, The Day My Brain Broke, of 25-year old Toronto native, Aunty Social aka Daniela Gitto. Released in March 2020, the EP documents a period of isolation and evolution for Daniela, as she worked her way out of a toxic lifestyle — computer, mic, and MIDI in hand. The moniker Aunty Social comes from Daniela’s this period of solitude, when she used music as a therapeutic aid to address her own struggles with mental health. Using these tools for recovery, the EP is both an amalgamation of references (from poetry to childhood memories) and a personal statement on the inner workings of the mind. Descriptors like electronica, experimental, and art pop don’t really do the EP justice, but they are starting points for understanding just how far Aunty Social can stretch.
All of the artwork for The Day My Brain Broke was self-created by collaging mixed media with older personal family photos to help honestly illustrate her feelings and experiences behind the music. Her talent and artistic abilities have already caught the attention of tastemaker outlets like Consequence Of Sound, Line Of Best Fit, Earmilk, Collide, Ladygunn, Refinery 29, Vanyaland, Ghettoblaster and influential Spotify playlists like Indie Pop, Outliers and Fresh Finds.
