The band are part of a fresh wave of energy in the city’s music scene…bold, uncompromising artistry” Clash Magazine
London five-piece pencil announce debut EP ‘Bohemian Clutter’, set for release May 9th via State51, and share new single ‘Silent Corners’, out today (March 19th).
Part of an exciting wave of bands from the capital bringing a sense of romance and melodicism back to the indie scene after recent years of post-punk revivalism, pencil have already graced festivals and venues across the UK and Europe with their ensemble synergy, building a reputation as an enthralling and unmissable live act with packed-out shows at Green Man and The Great Escape.
Now the band are ready to unveil a brand-new, six-track EP, ‘Bohemian Clutter’. With its oneiric sensibilities, their latest offering takes inspiration from Herman Hesse’s Steppenwolf (a line from which gives the EP its title). Like the uncanniness of the novel, ‘Bohemian Clutter’ explores the gauzy line between reality and fantasy.
With three releases to their name already, pencil have attracted widespread attention touring with The Japanese House, as well as drawing praise from key press champions The Independent, DIY, Dork, The Line Of Best Fit, So Young, Clash, Rough Trade and La Blogotheque, and BBC 6 Music airplay (Deb Grant, Tom Ravenscroft, Marc Riley - live session, Gideon Coe).
Speaking ahead of the track’s release, pencil revealed: “‘Silent Corners’ is the sound of something beautiful turning into something terrifying, a meditation on what might lurk beneath the surface. We wanted the song to unfold in the way that a dance track might, constantly growing and gaining momentum, before eventually collapsing in on itself.”
Produced alongside Polly Mackey (Art School Girlfriend) and mixed by Luciano Rossi (Mui Zyu), pencil’s ’Silent Corners’ is out now via State51 and available on all digital platforms.
pencil are Coco Inman (violin), Dom Potts (bass), Kamran Khan (acoustic guitar + vocals), Thomas Fiquet (drums), Cai Burns (electric guitar + vocals)
