“The band are part of a fresh wave of energy in the city’s music scene…bold, uncompromising artistry” Clash Magazine
London five-piece pencil release debut EP ‘Bohemian Clutter’, out today (May 9th) via State51.
Part of an exciting wave of bands from the capital bringing a sense of romance and melodicism back to the indie scene after recent years of post-punk revivalism, pencil have already graced festivals and venues across the UK and Europe with their ensemble synergy, building a reputation as an enthralling and unmissable live act with packed-out shows at Green Man and The Great Escape.
Now ready to unveil a brand-new, six-track EP, ‘Bohemian Clutter’. With its oneiric sensibilities, their latest offering takes inspiration from Herman Hesse’s Steppenwolf (a line from which gives the EP its title). Like the uncanniness of the novel, ‘Bohemian Clutter’ explores the gauzy line between reality and fantasy.
With several releases to their name already, pencil have attracted widespread attention touring with The Japanese House, as well as drawing praise from key press champions The Independent, DIY, Dork, The Line Of Best Fit, So Young, Clash, Rough Trade and La Blogotheque, and BBC 6 Music airplay (Deb Grant, Tom Ravenscroft, Marc Riley - live session, Gideon Coe). The band are also primed for several festival appearances at the likes of The Great Escape and Dot To Dot in the coming weeks, before their biggest London headliner yet at The Waiting Room on May 28th.
Detailing their EP release, pencil revealed: “We're incredibly pleased to share our debut EP ‘Bohemian Clutter’. We felt it essential to capture our dynamic as a live band on this EP and invite the listener into the room with us to hear these songs. The songs on ‘Bohemian Clutter’ were recorded almost entirely live with Polly Mackey aka Art School Girlfriend and mixed by Luciano Rossi (Mui Zyu). We're very proud of the world we've opened up with these songs and can't wait to play these songs live very soon.”
pencil’s ’Bohemian Clutter’ (EP) is out now via State51 and available on all digital platforms.
pencil are Coco Inman (violin), Dom Potts (bass), Kamran Khan (acoustic guitar + vocals), Thomas Fiquet (drums), Cai Burns (electric guitar + vocals)
