Supercrush's power pop sound harkens back to the days when guitar bands like Teenage Fanclub and Weezer walked the line between melody and noise like long-haired aerial artists. The West Coast group conjured up these perfect pop sounds on a series of singles in the 2010s, then delivered a knockout blow with their hook-filled debut album, 2020's SODO Pop. A sugar sweet aperitif arrived with their 2022 EP, Melody Maker.
Guitarist/vocalist Mark Palm was in a wide variety of bands prior to starting Supercrush that ranged from hardcore to heavy rock; the poppiest of them was the shoegaze-influenced Modern Charms. When he stopped recording with that band and moved from San Francisco to Vancouver, he decided to focus on making music that hit the spot where power pop and grunge intersected and, unlike many of his previous groups, had a positive lyrical outlook. Sounding like a heavy Matthew Sweet or a less-abrasive Nirvana, Palm and drummer Aaron O'Neil released a string of singles that began with 2013's "Lifted" on the Grave Mistake label. Three more followed for the Debt Offensive label between 2015 and 2018; the slow pace was due to Palm's perfectionist desire to only release the best songs he could. The singles were rounded up on the 2019 collection Never Let You Drift Away, by which time Palm and a group of collaborators who included bassist Phil Jones and drummer Allen Trainer had begun work on the first Supercrush album. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi
