“Each track’s journey is boldly unique” - DIY
“Chockfull of pop bops” - DORK
London-based, South African band HONEYMOAN are releasing their highly anticipated debut album Sorry Like You Mean It on 29 September. A record already finding fans with the likes of DIY and DORK, it features previously released singles ‘Sorry Like You Mean It’, ‘We’re On An Island, But It’s The UK’, ‘Show You Off’ and ‘Sit Right’. Today the band share the final cut to be taken from it ahead of release with ‘Seriously, Good Luck With That’ and its accompanying video.
In a change of tempo from previous releases, ‘Seriously, Good Luck With That’, shows off the slower side of HONEYMOAN. A much more sultry offering, the track drips with acoustic guitar, shimmering synths and grooving basslines.
Speaking on the track, Alison Rachel offers:
'Seriously, Goodluck With That is different to any song we've made or released before, with it's non-lyrical improvised jam that flourishes in the chorus. We had a lot of fun with this one pushing ourselves outside of our comfort zone. The song speaks about someone who performs like they care about the world and people around them, when upon closer inspection their actions are self-serving. A further exploration of this character reveals that they're suffering and don't feel safe, so they put on a performance to protect themselves and try to convince themselves and others they are not terrible.'
Lyrically across their upcoming album ‘Sorry Like You Mean It’, Alison details that the upcoming album deals mostly with her love life, from breakups and infidelity, to mental health issues within dating. Through turbulent times, themes of self-love and empowerment are prevalent from the band. Outside of HONEYMOAN Alison is a published author and illustrator of ‘Recipes for Self-Love: How to Feel Good in a Patriarchal World’. She also runs a powerful, self-love social media outlet under the name Recipes For Self Love, with nearly half a million followers on Instagram.
About HONEYMOAN
Even at HONEYMOAN’s very first jam in their native Cape Town, it was clear they had a rare creative spark. By the end of day one they had already produced two ready-made bangers – the bracing guitar-driven rush of ‘</3’, and the slick down-tempo earworm ‘W e’ – that were only a taste of what was to come. That spark has now been fanned into an intense flame. HONEYMOAN, consisting of frontwoman Alison Rachel, multi - instrumentalist Skye McInnes who she’s known since their teenage years, and producer Josh Berry. Now based in London, HONEYMOAN’s journey to this assured point has been turbulent, seeing the trio operate at times with members scattered across different continents, and maintaining momentum through the coronavirus pandemic, but whatever has come their way the y’ve never lost that sense of creative freedom that was there from the start. “We’ve always managed to maintain that energy of playing for fun” Alison says
