London-based, South African indie-pop risers HONEYMOAN continue to soar with new single ‘We’re On An Island, But It’s The UK’. The track is a follow up to previous single ‘Sit Right’ taken from their upcoming album ‘Sorry Like You Mean It’, coming 29 September. Introspective and heartfelt, the track shimmers with a hopeful atmosphere. The band’s classic impactful production and talent for writing earworm choruses continues with full force on ‘We’re On An Island, But It’s The UK’, with layers of guitars and synths and an infectious sing along chorus. Songwriting wise, frontwoman Alison Rachel says she leans towards pop, whilst guitarist Skye McInnes leans more progressive rock. With producer Josh Berry playing in the band, HONEYMOAN create a thrilling mix of pop and rock, fizzing with life, drive and texture. |
Speaking on the track, Alison offers: “This song just fell out of us in one afternoon, its simple synth lead and throwback 80s feel captivated us without need for much embellishment. The song is about the times we tell ourselves stories about the world to suit ourselves, and how we sometimes don't want to know the truth because it's too uncomfortable to face.” |
The video for ‘We’re On An Island, But It’s The UK’ is a masterclass in how to have fun with a greenscreen. Featuring infectiously feel-good dancing from frontwoman Alison, her goofball antics in front of building demolitions, cliff divers, a pneumatic press and a myriad of mad-cap backgrounds captures the bands breezy coolness and irresistible energy. Lyrically across their upcoming album ‘Sorry Like You Mean It’, Alison details that the upcoming album deals mostly with her love life, from breakups and infidelity, to mental health issues within dating. Through turbulent times, themes of self-love and empowerment are prevalent from the band. Outside of HONEYMOAN Alison is a published author of ‘Recipes for Self-Love: How to Feel Good in a Patriarchal World’. She also runs a powerful, self-love social media outlet under the name Recipes For Self Love, with nearly half a million followers on Instagram. About HONEYMOAN Even at HONEYMOAN’s very first jam in their native Cape Town, it was clear they had a rare creative spark. By the end of day one they had already produced two ready-made bangers – the bracing guitar-driven rush of ‘</3’, and the slick down-tempo earworm ‘W e’ – that were only a taste of what was to come. That spark has now been fanned into an intense flame. HONEYMOAN, consisting of frontwoman Alison Rachel, multi - instrumentalist Skye McInnes who she’s known since their teenage years, and producer Josh Berry. Now based in London, HONEYMOAN’s journey to this assured point has been turbulent, seeing the trio operate at times with members scattered across different continents, and maintaining momentum through the coronavirus pandemic, but whatever has come their way the y’ve never lost that sense of creative freedom that was there from the start. “We’ve always managed to maintain that energy of playing for fun” Alison says |
