London-based, South African born alt-poppers HONEYMOAN announce their highly anticipated debut album, Sorry Like You Mean It, out on 29 September, and present their new single of the same name. The track arrives alongside a striking music video starring frontwoman Alison Rachel as she rejects various tokens of reconciliation, before running away from home to find catharsis at a line dancing club. The glorious closing moments feature her provocatively sitting on a three-tiered cake emblazoned with the word ‘sorry’. Watch the music video here.
Their new single of the same name ‘Sorry Like You Mean It’ is an absorbing and driven anthem, soaring from forlorn and tightly controlled verses, to a monumental chorus. Walls of fizzing guitars and blasting drums are pierced by the infectious vocals of frontwoman Alison Rachel. Alison’s lyrics delve deep into the personal, on the new single she says:
“Sorry Like You Mean it was the last song we wrote for the album and it's loosely based on a relationship I had with someone who was struggling with their mental health and addiction. The song explores the trials of loving someone who seems unwilling to change and has become so attached to suffering that it is almost pleasurable for them. The narrative touches on the eventual realisation that without their desire to change nothing will change, and then taking responsibility for one's own choices in the face of such a realisation”
Following on from previous single ‘Shortcuts’ and their trio of outstanding EPs Palace, Weirdo and Body, debut album Sorry Like You Mean It is a defining moment for HONEYMOAN. A record of enormous scope, from dynamic, psychedelic pop to gritty pop-punk, and even nods to afropop, Sorry Like You Mean It promises to be incredibly special, evidenced by indie-tinged lead single ‘Shortcuts’ and powerful new single ‘Sorry Like You Mean It’.
Even at HONEYMOAN’s very first jam in their native Cape Town, it was clear they had a rare creative spark. By the end of day one they had already produced two ready - made bangers – the bracing guitar - driven rush of ‘</3’, and the slick down-tempo earworm ‘W e’ – that were only a taste of what was to come. That spark has now been fanned into an intense flame. HONEYMOAN, consisting of frontwoman Alison Rachel, multi - instrumentalist Skye McInnes who she’s known since their teenage years, and producer Josh Berry. Now based in London, HONEYMOAN’s journey to this assured point has been turbulent, seeing the trio operate at times with members scattered across different continents, and maintaining momentum through the coronavirus pandemic, but whatever has come their way the y’ve never lost that sense of creative freedom that was there from the start. “We’ve always managed to maintain that energy of playing for fun,” Alison says
