Heralded by a series of headline launch shows this week, Brighton ‘Orchestral Cult Rock’ sextet Flip Top Head share debut EP Up Like a Weather Balloon - out today (15th) via cult indie label Blitzcat Records (C Turtle).
Recorded with acclaimed producer Theo Verney (Lime Garden, English Teacher, Egyptian Blue, Blood Wizard), Up Like A Weather Balloon offers Flip Top Head’s long-awaited first collection, and the most confident realisation of their self-dubbed ‘Orchestral Cult Rock’ style to date. Across its 6 tracks, a quaint tapestry of forgotten characters and faded stories from a by-gone England - chance encounters with bodybuilders, mole catchers and parish vicars without fingernails - lead us down a shadowy road towards small, touching truths, executed with all the boldness, sensitivity and conviction of British New Wave cinema.
Marked out by a slew of tour dates across the UK and the EU this autumn - including a stop off at Rotterdam’s Left Of The Dial festival - the EP’s release follows a string of praise from across the UK indie press landscape, with support from the likes of NME, CLASH, So Young, DIY, Far Out, Clunk and God Is In The TV, as well as radio play from BBC Radio 6 Music (New Music Fix, BBC Introducing), Radio X (John Kennedy) and KEXP.
More about Flip Top Head:
Beginning as a college trio in Colchester before relocating to Brighton in the Autumn of 2020 and recruiting members from as far and wide as Hastings and Switzerland, the band signed to Blitzcat Records, releasing a string of singles garnering radio airplay from Deb Grant (BBC Radio 6Music), John Kennedy (Radio X), BBC Introducing Sussex, as well as the fulsome backing from the independent music press, heaping praise on the band for their blurred genre-boundaries and unpredictable, dramatic power.
In addition to shows alongside DEADLETTER, Opus Kink, Tapir!, Honeyglaze, Ugly, The New Eves, Mandrake Handshake and ELLiS·D, and festival bookings at The Great Escape, Brighten The Corners, Mutations, Left of The Dial and Sŵn, the band have also embarked on multiple nationwide tours in the past 18 months, regularly selling out dates in their Brighton hometown, London, Ipswich and Sheffield, as well as their debut `European show in Amsterdam this January.
