Ahead of a UK headline tour later this month, Brighton seven-piece Flip Top Head share the pacy delirium of sophomore single 'Alfred Street' via cult indie label Blitzcat Records (Kyoto Kyoto, Headboy, Gag Salon).
Marrying two-tone swagger, punkish grit, and haunting post-rock diversions - all within the space of a 3 minute blood-rush - this often-climactic closer to their live show encapsulates the band's self-styled brand of 'Orchestral Cult Rock'; a style where mystery, disjointedness and fragility collide in the shape of sliding trombones, cavernous soundscapes and compelling spoken word. Conceived in the pressure-cooker confines of their rehersal room, the band have this to say of their latest venture:
"The name “Alfred Street” bears reference to a street in Brighton (which Bowie eventually realised- months after writing the lyrics- is in fact called Alfred Road!). The song came about after we had a shit practice on a Monday evening where Alfie was acting rather cantankerous and it ended in not a great way. That Friday we had another practice and with the help of a few beers and Harry only having 40 minutes before he had to get his train, we decided to just start playing and see what happened. Then Bertie started playing the opening chords of what became Alfred Street. By the end of the 40 minutes we had the track near enough finished."
Beginning as a college trio in Colchester before relocating to Brighton in the Autumn of 2020 and recruiting members from as far and wide as Hastings and Switzerland, the band released debut single 'Seventh Bell Number' in February 2023 to acclaim from the likes of BBC 6 Music, Still Listening, Rodeo, Hard of Hearing, Wax and The Indie Scene. In their formative years, the band have since won support slots for the likes of DEADLETTER, Opus Kink, Honeyglaze, Mandrake Handshake and The New Eves, as well as notable appearances at the Great Escape, Brighten The Corners, with perfromances at Mutations and Sŵn festivals to come.
Flip Top Head are Bowie Bartlett (vocals, guitar), Bertie Beer (vocals, guitar), Marie Freiss (bass), Alfie Beer (trombone, guitar), Harrison Spooner (guitar), Ollie White (synth, guitar, vocal effects), Harry Giles (drums)
