Announcing news of debut EP Up Like A Weather Balloon and a string of UK/EU headline tour dates this coming month - including an appearance at Rotterdam’s Left of The Dial festival - Brighton’s Flip Top Head share whimsical new single ‘So Much For Mole Catching’ - due 17th September via cult indie label Blitzcat Records (C Turtle, PLAY DEAD).
Showcasing the lighter, more optimistic side of their self-constructed ‘Orchestral Cult Rock’ style, ‘...mole catching’ melds frolicking indie-folk and intricate post-rock headiness across its dramatic three-minute span, defined as ever by the dexterous vocal interplays of Bowie Bartlett and Bertie Beer that switch seamlessly from operatic lilts to intimate spoken word.
Recorded with acclaimed producer Theo Verney (Lime Garden, English Teacher, Egyptian Blue, Blood Wizard), the track’s lyric delves into the beauty latent in life’s random encounters; the band spent four hours with a total stranger whose father happened to be British Mole Catcher of the Month, providing the song its title and refrain. Offering more on the track, the band say:
‘So Much for Mole Catching’ is loosely about the small moments you share with a significant other. From breakfast to bed, everything before, after and in-between. Those seemingly mundane moments make you, as one heart, whole. We knew we wanted a slightly more lighthearted, catchy tune to add into the mix and, much to our surprise, it came to us pretty easily! We almost see this song as a turning point of sorts for our writing as a band and hope that it gives an encouraging glimpse into the future of Flip Top Head.”
More about Flip Top Head:
Beginning as a college trio in Colchester before relocating to Brighton in the Autumn of 2020 and recruiting members from as far and wide as Hastings and Switzerland, the band signed to Blitzcat Records, releasing a string of singles garnering radio airplay from Deb Grant (BBC Radio 6Music) and BBC Introducing Sussex, as well as the fulsome backing from the independent music press, with So Young (Online/Print), DIY, Loud & Quiet, Rough Trade, Blogothèque, God Is In the TV, Still Listening, Rodeo, Hard of Hearing, Wax Music, Backseat Mafia, When The Horn Blows and Post-Brexit Pop all heaping praise on the band for their blurred genre-boundaries and unpredictable, dramatic power.
In addition to shows alongside DEADLETTER, Opus Kink, Tapir!, Honeyglaze, Ugly, The New Eves, Mandrake Handshake and ELLiS·D, and festival bookings at The Great Escape, Brighten The Corners, Mutations, Left of The Dial and Sŵn, the band have also embarked on multiple nationwide tours in the past 18 months, regularly selling out dates in their Brighton hometown in, London, Ipswich and Sheffield, as well as their debut `European show in Amsterdam this January.
Debut EP Up Like A Weather Balloon offers Flip Top Head’s long-awaited first major collection to date. A quaint tapestry of forgotten characters and faded stories from a by-gone England, chance encounters with bodybuilders, mole catchers and parish vicars lead us down a shadowy road towards small, touching truths, executed with all the boldness, sensitivity and conviction of British New Wave cinema.
