Following the announcement of EP Launch shows next month in London and Brighton, Brighton’s Flip Top Head share momentous new cut ‘I Can’t Wait Until I’m Old’.
The second teaser from upcoming debut EP Up Like A Weather Balloon - due next month via cult indie label Blitzcat Records (C Turtle, PLAY DEAD), showcases the boldest and most dramatic realisation to date of their self-dubbed ‘Orchestral Cult Rock’ style; solemn trombones and steady, funereal builds erupt into explosive post-rock surges, heightened by the startling, operatic lead vocal of Bowie Bartlett.
Recorded with Theo Verney (Lime Garden, English Teacher, Egyptian Blue, Blood Wizard), and coming off the back of celebrated lead single ‘So Much For Mole Catching - which ushered in support from NME, KEXP, DIY, So Young, Far Out and Radio X - as well as headline tours of the UK and mainland Europe - the band’s latest cut serves up a double-edged reflection on the frivolities of the childhood, as they explain:
"I Can’t Wait Until I’m Old’ addresses the childlike feelings of wanting to grow up- juxtaposed with elderly outcomes such as shaking hands and back pockets brimming with shopping bags. When you’re young, you wish to be older; big enough to go on rides, old enough to stay up late and eat sweets whenever you like. ‘Cant Wait Until I’m Old’ asks the question: at what point does one stop wishing to be older?"
Beginning as a college trio in Colchester before relocating to Brighton in the Autumn of 2020 and recruiting members from as far and wide as Hastings and Switzerland, the band signed to Blitzcat Records, releasing a string of singles garnering radio airplay from Deb Grant (BBC Radio 6Music), John Kennedy (Radio X), BBC Introducing Sussex, as well as the fulsome backing from the independent music press, with So Young (Online/Print), DIY, NME, Loud & Quiet, Rough Trade, KEXP, Blogothèque, Clunk, Far Out, God Is In the TV, Still Listening, Rodeo, Hard of Hearing, Wax Music, Backseat Mafia, When The Horn Blows and Post-Brexit Pop all heaping praise on the band for their blurred genre-boundaries and unpredictable, dramatic power.
In addition to shows alongside DEADLETTER, Opus Kink, Tapir!, Honeyglaze, Ugly, The New Eves, Mandrake Handshake and ELLiS·D, and festival bookings at The Great Escape, Brighten The Corners, Mutations, Left of The Dial and Sŵn, the band have also embarked on multiple nationwide tours in the past 18 months, regularly selling out dates in their Brighton hometown, London, Ipswich and Sheffield, as well as their debut `European show in Amsterdam this January.
Debut EP Up Like A Weather Balloon offers Flip Top Head’s long-awaited first major collection to date. A quaint tapestry of forgotten characters and faded stories from a by-gone England, chance encounters with bodybuilders, mole catchers and parish vicars lead us down a shadowy road towards small, touching truths, executed with all the boldness, sensitivity and conviction of British New Wave cinema
