Inspired after the success of ‘Sick and Tired’ at Radio 1 and Radio 6, workfriends returned to the ideas room in a flurry of energy and activity. Days later, the band exited sweaty and reborn with the new single ‘Stunt Doubles;’ a blisteringly high-speed song about the paranoia of a man who has spent too much time alone with his spiralling thoughts. Recorded and produced across various bedrooms in the band’s shared house in Sheffield, ‘Stunt Doubles’ expands even further on the band’s previous releases as it incorporates glitchy electronic drums and distorted organ stabs into the mix. This time Sheriff Baker’s drums are relentlessly quick; they power the groove forward with deadly, metronomic precision. The beat is interspersed with the rhythmic taps and clangs of makeshift percussion instruments like beer and wine bottles and Earl Gray and T. Carroll play off each other with punchy vocals and neurotic, Kafkaesque lyrics. T. Carroll’s concrete guitar riffs punctuate J. Hope’s driving bass line with manic, staccato melodies and, to top it off, Jackson K’s shaker gives the song a dancey, energetic kick. ‘Stunt Doubles’ is ‘pop’ turned on its head.
