Picking up the mantle of grainy post-punk bands like Zounds, the Yummy Fur, and Wire, Sunderland-based Roxy Girls make fast, short, direct songs high on energy and excitement. The band trimmed their music of all superfluous filler for their seven-song 2020 EP A Wealth of Information, which runs a scant 13 minutes.
Roxy Girls slowly formed out of the teenage explorations of singer/guitarist songwriter Tom Hawick and his friends. After spending some time writing songs in a Velvet Underground-inspired band, Hawick got a surge of punk-informed creative energy and enlisted his bandmates to record a song of his called "Two Dead Nuns." This 91-second demo effectively started Roxy Girls, who released the minute-long single "Dangerous Driving" in late 2017 and began playing local shows as a trio. A self-titled four-song EP came out in 2018, and they recorded with David Brewis of Field Music for their 2019 mini-album A Poverty of Attention. Now working as a quartet, Roxy Girls continue their Minutemen-meets-Gang of Four style on 2020 release A Wealth of Information. ~ Fred Thomas, Rovi
