Crawling out from the sewers of South East London's underground, London experimental rock trio Vaermina share mini-album 'Tantrum' - out today (24th November) via Sleep Paralysis Records
Welding together elements of Metalcore, Punk, Industrial, Synth-Pop and Folk into ever more discomfiting and unhinged combinations, 'Tantrum' uncontrollably veers between the Bewitching, the Pretty, and the Downright Deranged.
Drawing its aesthetic palate from the uncanny landscapes of Japanese Anime and classic Horror - coating itself in the mean layer of graphic violence all the while - the 8 song-set never fails to shock, spook or surprise: from the soothsaying supernature of opener 'Sally's Song', to the rip-roaring Mandy, Indiana-meets Melt Banana of lead single 'Real Panic'; from the organ-fuelled psychedelic freak-outs of 'Cries and Whispers' to eerie left-field forays to ethereal Irish folk-song on 'Irish Blessing'.
Defined throughout by Caitlin Power's acrobatic vocals - at one point sounding oracular as Danish psych legend Annisette Koppel of The Savage Rose, at another like the devil's victim in The Exorcist - and powered too by Argentero's demonic spoken word and Hewetson's mind-gorging rhythms, the collection rarely stays in the same spot; manic like a wasp, with a deadly poison in its sting.
Marking a brave new era for this intriguing group, band founder Orazio Argentaro offers this on the album: "With a constellation of dazzling keys, relentless distorted guitars and merciless all out drumming in a folk punk doom metalcore galaxy, 'Tantrum is the first REAL release by Vaermina. Its highly emotional lyrics offer no answer to the dramatic surprises around the corner, no comfort, no rest for the romantics - “tantrum” acknowledges the radicality of trauma and the confusion of defeat."
Releasing lead single 'Real Panic' earlier this month to the support of grassroots champions So Young, Wax, Acute Pop, Pete Does Interviews and Retratandovoces, Vaermina have been steadily building a cult following in their south london base with regular self-promoted 'Sleep Paralysis' events.
Starting originally as the solo project of vocalist/bassist Orazio Argentaro, Vaermina formed an all-new rock ensemble forged for 2023, featuring past and present members of grassroots' mainstays Piglet, Paddywak, Mitsubishi Suicide, Pretty Sick and Birthday Girl in their three-piece line-up.
Vaermina are Caitlin Power (Vocals and Keys), Hal Hewetson (drums) and Orazio Argentero (Vocals, Bass)
