Crawling out from the sewers of South East London's underground, London experimental rock trio Vaermina announce debut album 'Tantrum' and share the spine-tingling 'Real Panic'
With an all-new rock ensemble forged for 2023, featuring past and present members of grassroots' mainstays Piglet, Paddywak, Mitsubishi Suicide, Pretty Sick and Birthday Girl in their three-piece line-up, 'Real Panic' supplies a succint, explosive reintroduction to Vaermina's cultic dominions.
Studded with Caitlin Power's vocal put-downs - "I don't like your plan. It sucks!" - 'Real Panic' is Mandy, Indiana meets Melt Banana meets metal; a sub-two minute orgy of distorted bass-chord sludge and seismic snare-roll rumblings, topped with an ominously catchy synth-pop gloss.
With an accompanying video inspired by Japanese Horror and darkweb aesthetics - directed by Bertik Korenek and starring cosplayer FeiFei as its disturbed protagonist - there's a overall fog of freakish estrangement to Vaermina's world, as vocalist/bassist Orazio Argentero explains:
"Real Panic is a song about the fear of incompatibility. It was written initially as an electronic tune using lyrics from Video Games, but when the Vaermina band fully formed, it seemed pretty fitting to turn it into a ragey synth punk tune, where Caitlin and myself recite the lines over Hal’s unhinged drumming. It’s a nice introductory song to the forthcoming album which mainly deals with the bittersweet frustration in human interaction."
Welding together elements of Metalcore, Hardcore, Industrial, Synth-Pop and Folk into ever more discomfiting and unhinged combinations, upcoming mini album 'Tantrum' - due 24th November - uncontrollably veers between the Bewitching, the Pretty, and the Downright Deranged. Defined by Power's acrobatic vocals, Argentero's demonic spoken word and Hewetson's mind-gorging rhythms, the snapshot 8 song collection rarely stays in the same spot - manic like a wasp, with a deadly poison in its sting.
Building a cult live-following through their 'Sleep Paralysis' events held across their south London base, Vaermina released a string of diy lo-fi electronic releases over the past 18 months - 2022's Love Bots, featured an early version of 'Real Panic' - before settling on their current, rock-focused line-up.
Vaermina are Caitlin Power (Vocals and Keys), Hal Hewetson (drums) and Orazio Argentero (Vocals, Bass)
