Ahead of a special headline show at The George Tavern later this month, Buckinghamshire-born, London-based singer/songwriter releases new EP Thank You, Joe Fernandez’ today (22nd November ), led by balladic new cut ‘So Long’.
Following on from his work with much-loved power pop quintet Weird Milk, Charlie’s solo output channels his life-long love for classic British songwriters - Ray Davies, to Elvis Costello; Neil Hannon to Richard Hawley. His first release with a full backing band, ‘Thank You…’ delivers a 6-song set of social commentaries, baroque-pop whimsy, guitar-pop nostalgia, channelling 60s-leaning pop-art aesthetics while keeping his feet planted in the humdrum of the here and now.
Releasing his debut EP just this March, playing shows this year with the likes of Trudy and The Romance and Hutch, Charlie has also won the backing of American Pop-crooner Stephen Sanchez, Shindig!, Far Out, Radio X (John Kennedy), Still Listening, Hard of Hearing and Babystep Magazine, balladic new single ‘So Long’ caps off a busy 2024.
Balladic new single 'So Long' caps off the EP, and a busy 2024. Offering more details on the track, Charlie says:“The song was written for a short film made by my friend John Otteson. The film follows a young teenager riding the bus to and from school. I wanted to write a song where the character was looking back and reflecting on what had happened in their life so far. In the song they're learning to face and come to terms with memories that had troubled them before. There's a strong Don McLean influence in the tune. I wanted the characters in the song to be singing the chorus as if it was some historic folk song.
