Out today - eclectic Anglo-Parisan quartet Sourface share debut album The Eternal Summer ahead of a sold-out launch show at The Social in Soho this weekend.
Marbling yacht-rock, lounge, jazz, French-psych, funk, post-punk, and disco-house across an 11 song set full of twists and turns, the quartet fail, miserably, at wiping the grin off their (sour) faces. As giddying as musical theatre in the way they shift so eclectically from scene to scene in a flurry of sunshine melodies and grinning orchestrations, 'The Eternal Summer' offers a loose concept album about restoring sunlight to a darkened universe, and overcoming an ultimate evil in the so-called 'Lizard King'
Recorded in the heatwave of 2022 in the suburbs of the Paris, the band have been steadily gaining a cult followingin recent months with multiple sold-out headline shows and a penchant for expansive, ambitious music videos often going viral on social media - last week's release 'Now and Then' achieved 700k views on Instagram alone. All the while, plaudits from the independent press have come too, with the likes of Rough Trade Counter Culture, The Most Radicalist, God Is In The TV, Still Listening, Clunk, Joyzine, Rodeo, Wax and Last Bus Magazine all pledging their support for the band.
Leading the album launch comes the orchestral post-punk of 'Lizard King' - Stravinsky-meets-Fat White Family. Explaining more about the track, the band's Ludo Aslangul:
"‘The Lizard King’ is a god gone mad. Toni Bossi has realised the infinitely unhinged potential of the sun’s energy and is ready to use it for his mad exploits. ‘Lizard King’ celebrates Bossi’s ego through a satire of corporate greed and arrogance. It’s a warning of the consequences of letting greed fester into power."
