"Sliding between different genres while still grabbing that marguerita in its hand, Sourface’s music exudes summer.” Clunk Magazine
“What they have created is a reminder that things don’t have to be bleak, that the sun is just around the corner.” Joyzine
“Drawing from Bossa Nova, jazz, synth fusion and more, their music boasts a range of genres that come together to create songs with hints of hope, melancholy, and not to mention, hard-hitting French spoken word.” Last Bus Magazine
Accompanying the announcement of their debut album The Eternal Summer - out next March (22nd) - Anglo-Parisian quartet Sourface share the jagged post-punk evils of 'Lizard King'.
Drawing inspiration from The Doors' 20 minute epic 'The Celebration of The Lizard', the sinister rumblings of Fat White Family and Stravinsky's bone-gnawing orchestrations, 'The Lizard King' surges forward with an incessant propulsion - livid guitar chops, industrial clangour, and full-blown freak outs abounding across a boiling, breakneck 2 minute blast.
The second part of the group's forthcoming album, this latest track introduces The Eternal Summer's key antagonist - Toni Bossi AKA 'The Lizard King'. The band's evil-mastermind manager has built a machine to harness the power of the sun (explored on previous single 'Solaire'), using it to control the surrounding population - as the band themselves explain:
"‘The Lizard King is a god gone mad. Toni Bossi has realised the infinitely unhinged potential of the sun’s energy and is ready to use it for his mad exploits. ‘Lizard King’ celebrates Bossi’s ego through a satire of corporate greed and arrogance. It’s a warning of the consequences of letting greed fester into power."

For a band who in previous releases have channelled the funky fusions of 70s jazz legends Cortex, the lysergic French indie of La Femme, as well as the indie funk of Talking Heads - garnering the favour of indie press stalwarts Rough Trade, Still Listening, Clunk, Joyzine, Rodeo, Wax and Last Bus Magazine, as well as support slots with Cassia and Boyish - 'Lizard King''s post-punk tendencies reveals yet another string to Sourface's bow.
Formed at University in London right before the rupture of the pandemic as a means of channelling hope, manifesting their lives and looking to the future, the four-piece, now split between Paris and London, regularly perform in both cities, sing in both respective languages, infected by the spirit of both distinctive cultures
Recorded at the band's self-made Babylon Studio in Paris during last year's heatwave, The Eternal Summer - due for release on the week of the 2024 Spring Equinox - offers a song sequence celebrating sunlight, abundance and positivity, while exploring the dangers of having such things stripped away from us. Mingling post-punk, yacht-rock, jazz and disco-house it’s an album that fails, miserably, at wiping the grin off its face. It's as giddying as musical theatre in the way it shifts so eclectically from scene to scene in a flurry of sunshine melodies and grinning orchestrations.’
