US indie heavyweights Hippo Campus release introspective, anthem-stacked third record ‘LP3’, out today (February 4th) via NYC indie label Grand Jury (Samia, Twin Peaks, Jordana, Native Sun, Hovvdy).
Spearheaded by exhilarating lead single ‘Boys’ and tenacious pop gem ‘Semi Pro’, ‘LP3’ marks the band’s strongest and most complete work yet - an honest portrayal excavating young adulthood and identity and, more importantly, how that personal identity fits into a larger camaraderie.
It’s a study in the nuances of growing up - coming to terms with mortality, the confusion of sexuality, bottoming out, seeing decisions from the night before in the harsh morning light; finding your existence as a person and as an artist - how that can be a collision of elation and shame, painful and joyful all at once.
Detailing the album, frontman Jake Luppen explained: ““Songwriting-wise, we wanted to place a priority on more personal lyrics and more self-referential storytelling as opposed to larger concepts like we did on our first two records. In that way it’s similar to what we did on the ‘Bad Dream Baby’ EP, but in a more earnest way. The priority was on finding the feeling that we had in the early days - when we were really happy making music, you know.”
“With ‘LP3’, Hippo felt like a very safe space to express those things because you have your best friends around you, rallying behind you,” the songwriter continued. “And each person could chime in with their own experience. I felt like it was a very safe space to be earnest.”
Having already earned mainstage slots at the likes of Reading & Leeds, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and Governor’s Ball, combined with effusive praise from key indie press champions (DIY, Dork, The Line Of Best Fit, The Independent, Gigwise, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Consequence of Sound), and countless BBC Radio 1 spins (Jack Saunders, Clara Amfo), the Minnesotan quintet’s vast potential is certainly gathering pace, with a huge UK/EU/US live run lined up to coincide with its arrival.
Hippo Campus’ ‘LP3’ is out today (February 4th) via Grand Jury and will be available on all digital platforms.
Hippo Campus is Jake Luppen (vocalist, guitarist), Nathan Stocker (vocalist, guitarist), Whistler Allen (drummer), Zach Sutton (bassist), DeCarlo Jackson (trumpeter)
