US indie juggernauts Hippo Campus share veracious, bubbling new single ‘Bang Bang’, the final reveal from the band’s upcoming record ‘LP3’, set for release February 4th via NYC indie label Grand Jury (Samia, Twin Peaks, Jordana, Native Sun, Hovvdy).
The cascading, silvery track poetically compares the lust-over-logic struggle of a long distance relationship to the bleakness of winter, featuring a crystalline synth line and driving, burnished guitar riffs. It’s accompanied by a trippy animated clip (video here) directed by multimedia artist Lachlan Turczan (Phoebe Bridgers, Blake Mills, Flock of Dimes), and follows the band’s charismatic late-night US TV debut performing the anthemic ‘Ride or Die’ on ‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’ (Jan 19th).
On the track, Luppen says,“I was in a long-distance relationship for a long time and I knew that it wasn't working. But instead of us talking about it, we ignored it. It was a situation where our attraction to each other caused us to neglect all the very logical issues that were at hand.”
In explaining his vision for the video, Turczan says, "The goal for this project was to create an abstract visual language that synchronized with the energy of this song. My inspiration pulls heavily from the pioneers of visual music in animation, namely artists like Oskar Fischinger and Len Lye. It was also a nice challenge to incorporate the feel of the album artwork into this piece so that everything exists as a ben-day halftone pattern on newsprint."
With effusive praise rolling in from key indie press champions (DIY, Dork, The Line Of Best Fit, The Independent, Gigwise, Clash, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Consequence of Sound), as well as countless plays on the BBC Radio 1 airwaves (Jack Saunders, Clara Amfo), Hippo Campus’ vast potential is certainly gathering pace ahead of this week’s LP release, with a huge UK/EU/US live run lined up over the coming months.
Hippo Campus’ ‘Bang Bang’ is out February 1st via Grand Jury and will be available on all digital platforms.
Hippo Campus is Jake Luppen (vocalist, guitarist), Nathan Stocker (vocalist, guitarist), Whistler Allen (drummer), Zach Sutton (bassist), DeCarlo Jackson (trumpeter)
