US indie heroes Hippo Campus share scintillating new effort ‘Tooth Fairy’ (video here), out now via revered indie label Psychic Hotline (Sylvan Esso). Alongside the single release comes news of their biggest UK headline show to date at London’s iconic Shepherd’s Bush Empire on December 4th.
Marking their second slice of new music in 2024, following April release ‘Everything At Once’ (which generated praise from key indie press titans Clash, Dork and The Line Of Best Fit), ‘Tooth Fairy’ signifies a crucial career shift for the band, as they exit the traditional label system and partner with Psychic Hotline, a truly independent imprint run by peers and pals.
Recorded at their own studio in Minneapolis, Hippo Campus’ latest offering a quick-moving meditation on the confusion of interpersonal dynamics. The group smear bits of gentle psychedelia around a rhythm, riff, and hook that have the sleek lines of a sports car; the result is a dynamic wonder, a song that feels emphatic at the start but reaches full triumph by the end.
Speaking ahead of their single release, Hippo Campus revealed: “Our dreams have become so twisted these days. We spend too much time filling our brains with useless shit that has nowhere else to go but to our dreaming state. It all comes out sideways and in confusingly gnarly, mangled ways. ‘Tooth Fairy’ is a release; a process that leads to a letting go of fear and our athletic coping mechanisms.”
With a series of one-off shows scheduled throughout the summer months, the band are also set to perform standout slots at Lollapalooza and Governor’s Ball, with further new music set for release imminently.
Hippo Campus’ ‘Tooth Fairy’ is out now via Psychic Hotline and will be available on all digital platforms.
Hippo Campus is Jake Luppen (vocalist, guitarist), Nathan Stocker (vocalist, guitarist), Whistler Allen (drummer), Zach Sutton (bassist), DeCarlo Jackson (trumpeter)
