Eccentric art-rock quartet Gag Salon are back with the first part of their dramatic twopart rock opera, ‘Fishyman’.
‘Fishyman, Pt.1 (Flip Flop)’, out on September 27th via Blitzcat Records, sees frontman Joseph Mumford sing the story of a boy who awakens one morning to discover he is slowly turning into a fish.
He explains it’s based on personal experience: “A very popular boy I went to school with suddenly stopped coming in one day. Weeks went by with nobody hearing from him until one fateful day, a girl came shrieking into assembly, screaming that she’d heard his voice coming from the toilet bowl - he was singing. This song is kind of my own interpretation of what might have happened to him…”
Recorded with Chris McCrory (Catholic Action, The Joy Hotel, Walt Disco) in Glasgow, and featuring violin from Soren Bryce (Tummyache), the new single builds on the groundswell of acclaim Gag Salon achieved with their 2022 debut EP ‘Get A Load Of This Guy’, endorsed by big tastemakers BBC Radio 1, Radio 6 Music, NME, Dork Magazine and So Young Magazine.
The release comes as Gag Salon perform in a brand new Sadlers Wells production from the celebrated dance company BalletBoyz, ‘England on Fire’. Featuring diverse collaborators from Keaton Henson to Cassie Kinoshi, ‘England on Fire’ will see the band perform their music live to dance and film accompaniments.
Gag Salon will celebrate the release of the Fishyman series at a free show at Sebright Arms on October 28th.
