“A tuneful blast of fuzzed-out guitar” Stereogum
“pretty glorious indeed” DIY
“absolutely slaps” NME
“Feverish pop turns and frenetic guitar solos” Dork
“A deft pop explosion” Clash
London-based neo-grunge duo Exit Kid share new single ‘Icarus’ today as the second preview of the band’s debut LP slated for release later this year.
Opening with a classic scuzzy guitar groove, ‘Icarus’ rolls on with an understated swagger, climaxing with a blistering solo as the track soars skywards . Vocalist Emre Türkmen delivers lines musing on avoidance and the hubris of the titular myth.
As he explains: “Icarus is about our increasingly stubborn refusal to confront life in all its messiness. Instead, we chase a comfortable moral high-ground, forgetting the lessons of the past. Reality will always pull us back down to earth with a crash.”
Having initially made a name for themselves with a string of frenetic fuzzed-out releases, including their ‘Basis’ (2022) and ‘Garden’ (2021) EPs, the group have firmly leant on the most exhilarating elements of 90s alternative rock, whilst also showcasing a more introspective side in their compelling approach to the guitar music cannon.
Comprised of Emre Türkmen and Dylan Bell (drums), who met fatefully during the 2017 tour of Emre’s former band, Years and Years, the two-piece’s own brand of rock (think Smashing Pumpkins meets Blur) has already won widespread acclaim from the likes of NME, The Independent, Stereogum, DIY, Dork, The Line of Best Fit and Clash, as well as BBC Radio 1 airplay (Jack Saunders, Phil Taggart, Sian Eleri, Huw Stephens and more), with the group primed to hit the road later this year ahead of their debut album release.
