Dreamy alt-rock artist Dutch Mustard releases new EP Beauty today via DM Records.
The final single and title-track accompanies the release with a video, for which Dutch Mustard - AKA London based Sarah-Jayne Riedel (or ‘SJ’) - learnt to dance. It became an important moment for SJ:
"I’m not a trained dancer, so when I had the initial concept in mind for the video, I was hesitant to contact anyone to help make it a reality as I wasn’t sure I’d be able to pull it off. I was really lucky though because the dancer Matt Petty and I met while we were working together on a Netflix series last year. He's incredibly passionate about dance and he kindly taught me the choreography for the video, assisted by Clare Gill. His expertise and style suited the feel of the song perfectly so I'm extremely grateful to have had the pleasure of working with him. Learning to dance has been an exceptionally beautiful time in my life.“
Netherlands born Dutch Mustard marries a blend of ethereal dream-pop and 90s alt-rock with timeless shoegaze touches. The overall soundscape layers abstract drones and washes with bouncing psych-infused guitar lines, whilst SJ’s vocals drift between a borderline whisper and heaven-directed lung-bursts.
Sequencing the EP was an organic process - the songs that made their way into the frame each lived a full life, from demo stage through to the final form, without too much forced intentionality. As SJ explains:
"Throughout the process of collecting the “right” songs for this EP, and building of the tracks, I’ve learnt that sometimes we don’t need to keep pushing for ideas just because we want it to be like the music we already made, the music we love hearing, or are inspired by.
The real beauty can actually come from going back to the start. As daunting as this has felt, and feeling like maybe taking steps back, I’ve been overjoyed with the outcome; a few steps back actually meant moving forward. There’s a comfort knowing that every single one of these songs took form in a way that’s authentic to them and that I'm not just recreating music I've already made.”
The approach is firmly rooted in 2023, but the 90s influences aren’t hidden. She falls in-line with an exciting new wave of artists, with eyes to the ground, and heads in the clouds - NewDad, Bdrmm, cruush for example - who are making a fresh take on a storied genre.
Last year she released her debut EP An Interpretation of Depersonalisation, which was quickly featured by the BBC, getting airplay on Radio 1’s Future Artists with Jack Saunders and being selected by none other than rock's enduring sage Iggy Pop on 6 Music.
Press wise The Independent, The Line of Best Fit, CLASH, DORK and Notion have supported in the UK - and perhaps most tellingly she was picked out by The Grammy Awards Site as one of ‘6 Female Fronted Acts Reviving Rock’ alongside Wet Leg, and others.
SJ has spent the year since her debut release writing and experimenting creatively, while also juggling bar work at one of London’s infamous music haunts, and engineer work at a prestigious North London studio. Surrounding herself with music at all times and always pushing to learn from those around her has made for a formidable band leader.
Dutch Mustard’s new EP Beauty is out today via DM Records alongside the video for the title-track.
