October 15 - Dreamy alt-rock artist Dutch Mustard - the artist moniker of Sarah-Jayne Riedel (AKA SJ) - releases new single ‘Thank You’ via DM Records.
On ‘Thank You’ SJ demonstrates her twin talents - for songwriting, and production, and with this, an insatiable desire to learn. Whilst crafting a recognizable sonic world over her releases so far, she is also consistently developing this - and isn’t afraid of making bullish connections.
Following on from the Bill Ryder-Jones link-up, and Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio) mixing notes, that came from bold DMs on previous single ‘Loser’, SJ recently met with erstwhile Pulp bassist and producer/songwriter Anthony Genn and toured his studio. On playing her demos and getting some advice, she explains… “He told me "Thank You" was his favourite and gave a few production tips. That's when I decided that it should be the next single. One specific piece of advice that stood out most was the backing vocals advice, which I took on board for the track.”
These backing vocal harmonies mark ‘Thank You’ out as an evolution for Dutch Mustard, similarly tilting the dial ever so slightly from ‘hazy’ to ‘gritty’ on the shoegaze scale, and underlying everything with a pulsating thymic synth.
Thematically, SJ continues to explore relatable themes of self-possession, as she details:
“Thank you is about the euphoric feeling of being freed from a situation never meant for you. It's a song to remind you that you're in charge, and that you can always flip the script.”
ABOUT DUTCH MUSTARD
Netherlands born Dutch Mustard marries a blend of ethereal dream-pop and 90s alt-rock with timeless shoegaze touches. The overall soundscape layers abstract drones and washes with bouncing psych-infused guitar lines, whilst SJ’s vocals drift between a borderline whisper and heaven-directed lung-bursts.
The approach is firmly rooted in 2023, but the 90s influences aren’t hidden. She falls in-line with an exciting new wave of artists, with eyes to the ground, and heads in the clouds - NewDad, Bdrmm, cruush for example - who are making a fresh take on a storied genre.
In 2022 she released her debut EP An Interpretation of Depersonalisation, which was quickly featured by the BBC, getting airplay on Radio 1’s Future Artists with Jack Saunders and being selected by none other than rock's enduring sage Iggy Pop. This was followed by the Beauty EP in 2023, which saw similar acclaim - notably with multiple spins from Lauren Laverne on 6 Music, as well as backing from Don Letts and Amy Lamé.
Press wise The Independent, The Line of Best Fit, CLASH, DORK and Notion have supported in the UK - and perhaps most tellingly she was picked out by The Grammy Awards Site as one of ‘6 Female Fronted Acts Reviving Rock’ alongside Wet Leg, and others.
Since her debut release SJ has spent time writing and experimenting creatively, while also juggling bar work at one of London’s infamous music haunts, and engineer work at a prestigious North London studio. Surrounding herself with music at all times and always pushing to learn from those around her has made for a formidable band leader.
