Convenience Store foray again into unexpected territory with
their latest single ‘Sand’ – a quiet indie folk tune that indulges
in earnest simplicity. The release comes off the back of a
period of prolific gigging for the duo, playing local shows
across Melbourne as either a duo or with their band. On
‘Sand’, they carry over the spirit of their duo gigs with an
elegant two-man-show where delicate fingerpicked guitars and
bright harmonicas collude to pen a sentimental love-letter to
Bob Dylan. Warm guitar licks invoke the sounds of Big Thief
and Wilco while Nick Baker’s earnest lyricism reflects on the
unchangeable nature of the past.
Convenience Store is the Naarm/Melbourne music project of
early-20s oddballs Nick Baker and Jack Hill. Their grassroots
audience has grown both locally and abroad (in the USA and
UK) with radio play on KEXP, RRR, Double J and Triple J.
The duo obsessively record music in their DIY basement
studio, creating inventive rock which invokes the emotive and
messy sincerity of Alex G, Porridge Radio, and DIIV. Their
eclectic sound tours through memories of indie rock, post-
punk, electronic, and folk, and is unified by the dynamism of
their recording style and unique songwriting. Their tracks–like
their inspirations–reach in different directions but are unified by
the sorts of questions they ask: How else might we live? What
is Australia? What good is love?
A prolific run of packed-out shows throughout Melbourne –
including recent shows at the Retreat Hotel and a sold-out
Gasometer Hotel gig – showcase a unique and experimental
live set haunted by the detritus of rock convention.
Their monthly single releases have become an anticipated
event, growing their steady following of monthly listeners and
attracting attention from programs such as ABC’s Rage, where
their filmic DIY music videos have landed multiple 'Wild One'
features.
