‘Carousel’, Convenience Store’s sixth single release for the year, is an ambient and expressive electronic composition reminiscent of FKA Twigs or Nick Cave & Warren Ellis. The duo’s vocalist Nick recounts a strange projection from the ‘Kodak Carousel’ of his memory: someone close leaves forever on a train, and a sense of resolution is left deferred, forgotten. Distant orchestral sounds of accordions and cellos ebb alongside wandering synth arpeggios that feel trapped within the track’s Eno-esque soundscape. A final vocal refrain – ‘… And on the Carousel she stays’ – loops and stretches like a glitching dispatch from another time. The release is accompanied by a music video directed by Melbourne director Jamie Barry (past winner of St. Kilda Film Festival ‘Best Youth Film’). The video features a cast of isolated people caught in haunting vignettes of inaction and frustration. Cinematographer Ryan Bell (Agung Mango, Genesis Owusu) lends a sharp and mesmerising eye with shots that underscore the track’s subtlety.
