‘Angel’ is the next offering in Convenience Store’s prodigious
monthly single release schedule. The track is a delicate,
haunting DIY song that sounds suffocated by a fog of dreamy
guitar tones and far-off pianos. Beneath this lies the crushing
lyricism of vocalist Nick Baker, who pleads “when you know it
all, don’t fly away”. It’s a song about the difficulty of coming to
terms with your own complexity–a process that is often hazy,
foggy, strange, unreal–and it furthers the story of Convenience
Store’s imaginative, introspective music.
Convenience Store is the Naarm/Melbourne music project of
Nick Baker and Jack Hill. Their grassroots audience has grown
both locally and abroad (in the USA and UK) with radio play on
KEXP, RRR, Double J and Triple J.
The duo obsessively record music in their DIY basement
studio, creating inventive rock which invokes the emotive
music of Alex G, Porridge Radio, and DIIV. Their eclectic
sound tours through memories of indie rock, post-punk,
electronic, and folk, unified by the dynamism of their recording
style and uniquely sincere songwriting. Their tracks–like their
inspirations–reach in different directions but are unified by the
sorts of questions they ask: How else might we live? What is
Australia? What good is love?
A recent sold-out show at the Gasometer Upstairs as well as
live performances at the Heide Museum of Modern Art and a
support slot with beloved alt-RNB act 'Big Words' showcase a
unique and experimental live set haunted by the detritus of
rock convention.
Their monthly single releases have become an anticipated
event, growing their steady following of monthly listeners and
attracting attention from programs such as ABC’s Rage, where
their filmic DIY music videos have landed multiple 'Wild One'
features.
