With a life spent invested in multicontinental DIY music and left-of-centre design work, Blake Carlson-Joshua’s creative output has seemed almost unending. Now branching out from the bands of his past, Joshua is sharing the first tastes of his solo project, Steak Blake, with the single ‘Reality Shapes’.
Raised in the musical hotspot of Minneapolis, Joshua’s musical heritage included seminal acts like Hüsker Dü and Babes in Toyland, both of whom can be heard through the evocative strands running through his music. Further influencing his multi-faceted sound, a move to the UK in 2019 saw him joining cult-favourite DIY punk outfit Beige Banquet which led him to tour Europe relentlessly, sharing stages with acts like Crack Cloud, and Shame.
Through the confidence gained by his full band ventures, plus the influence of his further visual art outlets, Steak Blake was birthed. With an observant and instantly captivating art-punk style, at times resembling the ideals of Minutemen or even XTC, debut single ‘Reality Shapes’ draws you in with its melancholic guitars and dynamic vocals.
