Amateur Ornithologist bursts back into the world with new single, Hermit Phase, on Friday 6th May.
Hermit Phase is 150-seconds of foot-tapping alt pop, doo-wop backing vocals and anxious lyrics from Amateur Ornithologist, the musical alter ego of North East artist Daniel Clifford.
The single is Amateur Ornithologist’s first new music since 2021’s debut album Birdwatching, which received support from BBC Introducing and was described by Narc as “soaring glimpses of hope set to indie floor-fillers”.
Hermit Phase announces itself with cowbell shots and drumroll before jerky guitars lead into Daniel’s questioning lyrics: why are his experiences so different to the lives of his more confident, fitter, child-raising friends? Maybe a self-imposed exile will help sort him out…
The single continues Amateur Ornithologist’s collaboration with drum virtuoso Matt Hardy (Lovely Assistant) and cornerstone of the North East music scene Harbourmaster (District Attorney). Matt recorded drums and percussion at his South Base Studio in Bristol, while Harbourmaster produced the track in his South Shields studio.
Hermit Phase takes listeners on a short journey through the Amateur Ornithologist mindset - taking in coastlines of self-doubt and woodlands of gallows humour along the way. The trip continues in June with the next Amateur Ornithologist single.
Hermit Phase is released digitally by Harbourmaster Recordings on Friday 6th May.
