Marking the news of long-awaited debut EP Remember To Have Fun - due 9th May - and a series of tour dates this spring (including an intimate hometown show at Manchester’s Castle Hotel) Adam Hopper & The Wimps share cruising, 60’s garage-inspired cut ‘My Friend Al’
Released via Sheffield tastemaking label Bingo Records (Responsible for early releases from The Bug Club and Melyn Melin), Adam Hopper’s whimsically nostalgic brand of anti-folk-tinged indie has, across the last 12 months, accumulated a wealth of backers, among them The Line of Best Fit, Far Out, Rough Trade, Blogotheque, Hard of Hearing, The Indie Scene and John Kennedy (Radio X).
Having sold out their debut headline show at Low Four studios last year, to bolster a plethora of support slots for the likes of Chris Cohen, Ethan P. Flynn, Jesca Hoop and The Golden Dregs, new single ‘My Friend Al’ (Al, as in ‘Alex’, not Artificial Intelligence), represents the quintet’s most buzzing and strident cut to date.
Wheeling out guitar jangles and harmonica blasts, as if right from the grooves of the seminal Nuggets-compilation, and folding it into Hopper’s endlessly affable and cosy northern charm, ‘My Friend Al’ introduces the key themes explored across Remember To Have Fun, namely, the recovery of childhood innocence, and a veneration of the benign, yet invaluable interactions that shape our everyday lives. Offering more on the single, Adam says:
“From the years 2007 - 2010 my friends and I spent every single Saturday meeting at the Blockbuster Videos in Great Driffield on the corner of George Street and Middle Street South at 11am/12pm. We would spend a while looking at the computer games, then go to Cooplands bakery for 4 sausage rolls. After this, we would go back to mine and play Halo 3 for at least 5 hours. My Friend Al is a dedication to that time and my friend Alex.”
