Coming ahead of a series of tour dates this month, including an intimate Manchester headline at The Castle Hotel, Manchester’s Adam Hopper & The Wimps share debut EP Remember To Have Fun - out today (8th May) via Bingo Records (The Bug Club, Melin Melyn).
Launching with the rollicking 60s-garage-inspired blasts of ‘My Friend Al’, the 4-track EP is infused with a jangle-pop sensibility, an affable heart-on-sleeve confessionalism, and an ever-sunny disposition that lands somewhere between the anti-folk of The Moldy Peaches and beaming narratives of The Beautiful South. Imbued with nostalgia and reflection, the 4-track collection sees the group thematically explore the recovery of childhood innocence, and a veneration of the benign, yet invaluable interactions that shape our everyday lives.
The release also anticipates a series of co-headline tour dates with British Birds this month, as well as an intimate homecoming show at The Castle Hotel. With a sold-out debut headline at Low Four Studios to their name, as well as a plethora of noteworthy support slots for the likes of The Golden Dregs, Ethan P. Flynn and Jesca Hoop, the band can also boast radio airplay on BBC Radio 6Music (Amy Lamé), BBC Introducing (Emily Pilbeam) and Radio X (John Kennedy), to add to a wealth or press backing which includes The Line of Best Fit, Far Out, Rough Trade, Clunk, The New Age Magazine, Blogotheque, Hard of Hearing and The Indie Scene.
Offering more on the EP as a whole, Adam says: "If something isn't fun anymore, don't do it! I wrote these four tracks around the same time early last summer, and they immediately felt like they belonged together, they had a similar nostalgic, wistful air about them. The EP is about growing up and growing older; it's about friendship and looking after those close to you"
More about Adam Hopper & The Wimps:
Formerly of now-defunct post-punk outfit Blanketman, Manchester’s Adam Hopper began performing solo in 2022, turning his hand to a sweeter, more wistful, and melodic brand of Anti-folk-tinged songwriting. Adam’s music now looked towards finding hope and fantasy in the everyday and seemingly benign - think video games, gardening or looking after his cat Pippa.
Forming The Wimps last year from friends and local musicians (Autocamper, The Accident Group), the newly assembled five-piece have since performed regularly across the cities and provincial towns of North West England. Their debut EP Remember To Have Fun - set for a limited edition Cassette release - is marked by a special headline show at Manchester’s Castle Hotel on 30th May, and a string of co-headlines with British Birds.
