Manchester’s Abbie Ozard releases new single ‘i don’t know happiness without you’ today via House Anxiety.
A breezy and unapologetically anthemic indie banger ‘i don’t know happiness without you’ pulls from the best parts of buoyant 90s optimism and The Cure’s bittersweet palette. Thematically, it encapsulates a ‘Start Life Crisis’. Growing pains and the overwhelming first steps into adulthood stand out as overarching themes, soothed by warm bonds of friendship. As Abbie elaborates:
"The track comments on how confusing, difficult and chaotic life can be in your twenties, with pressure coming in from every direction. I find that there’s an expectation for you to have your life figured out, when really you still feel 18. Essentially all you want to do is have fun but you need to be fully focused on your career, aspirations and everything in between.
Unlike before, I now find letting loose and having fun really difficult as I have an overriding sense of guilt when I do. Maybe that’s because I don't feel like I fully have my ‘life together’ as such, so I don't want to waste time. But there are moments with friends that I just think fuck it. I find these moments so valuable, and that’s what gets me through everything.”
‘i don’t know happiness without you’ follows last summer’s acclaimed zodiac-themed odyssey, the Water Based Lullabies EP and continues an evolution in sound hinted at by early 2023 single ‘ford (drive)’. As she starts to enter a new era, Abbie’s musical and personal growth is laid bare.
It will no doubt be lapped up by a supportive indie scene that has welcomed and lifted Abbie from her early outings with the likes of Lauran Hibberd, Whenyoung and Phoebe Green. Following her first headline tour in December 2022, this year also saw her first appearance at Glastonbury Festival.
Championed throughout her career by the most trusted of tastemakers, press takes have come in from broadsheets (The Times, The Independent), indie bibles (DORK, The Line of Best Fit, Clash) and style / culture press (The FADER, NOTION, HUNGER) alike.
Jack Saunders and Huw Stephens have consistently backed across BBC Radio 1, with Abbie McCarthy and Chris Hawkins offering spins at BBC 6 Music, and a recent Track of the Week feature for latest single ‘Ford (drive)’ on BBC Introducing.
Abbie will be taking new material on the road and no doubt winning an army of new fans, with an upcoming winter tour in the UK and Europe supporting Briston Maroney.
