city: Los Angelescarpetgarden (they/them) release their new single ‘lonely’ today (November 10th) via House Anxiety - responsible for launching the careers of King Krule, Bad Boy Chiller Crew, Courtney Barnett and more. It comes ahead of the WTF Is Even Going On EP on November 18th.
AKA David Sweet, the Fresno, California native fuses bedroom-pop with lo-fi indie and beatsy R&B to produce an engaging, impish sound. Taken together with lyrics that tackle growing up and embracing their non-binary identity via personal anecdotes that entwine with explorations of gender dysphoria, carpetgarden has begun to resonate on a truly impactful global scale.
10s of millions of plays across streaming sites, and over 100k followers combined across Instagram and TikTok point to their relatable button-pushing persona both on record and online.
The single follows other EP cuts ‘IDC’ - a Gen Z pop-punk answer to The Beach Boys - the introspective ‘mold’ and psychedelic garage-pop potion ‘da da song’. The modern genreless costume-switching across - and oftentimes within - songs highlights their chameleonic attitude to pop, whilst retaining a distinguishable through-line anchoring it in David’s world.
“This is a song I wrote when I was first starting a sort of “adult life” for myself,” David recounts of the inspiration behind the track. “A lot of the time I felt confident in myself, but also a lot of the time I felt super lonely.”
Part of a burgeoning clique of buzzy West Coast artists including Sophie Meiers (RCA), and CMTEN (Warner) a spirit of community pervades carpetgarden’s approach to their music. This extends to working with producer Luca Buccellati, whose credits include Arlo Parks, HMLTD and Hazel English.
