Theon Cross is one of those rare musicians whose vision has redefined their instrument. Through his combination of technical mastery, studio smarts, deep musical knowledge and expansive vision, the power and originality of Theon’s playing has reinvented the tuba’s place in modern music.
A graduate of Guildhall and an alumnus of the legendary Tomorrow’s Warriors, Theon transcends traditional genre conventions with his brew of low-end theory combined with strains of ‘jazz, dub, hip-hop, soca, grime, and other sounds from the Afro-Caribbean diaspora’.
Since 2013 Theon has been a core member of MOBO award-winning group Sons of Kemet. He has played regularly with the likes of Nubya Garcia, Moses Boyd; Ezra Collective; Steamdown and SEED Ensemble, among many more. Beyond jazz, he has played alongside Stormzy, Kano, Little Simz to name a few.
Theon’s 2015 debut, Aspirations led to a Jazz FM nomination as Best Newcomer, and a Parliamentary Award nomination for Best Instrumentalist. His acclaimed 2019 LP, Fyah, reached no.1 in the UK jazz chart, was nominated for awards by Jazz FM and Gilles Petersen’s Worldwide FM, and received critical recognition across the mainstream and music press, appearing in numerous end of year lists. In 2019, Theon was winner of the Downbeat 67th Critics’ Poll ‘Rising Star’ award.
At SXSW 2021 Online , he performed as an avatar in the world’s first VR showcase and 2021 will see him release new music and return to touring.
