city: London"moody shoegaze gems with truly sunny singalongs in perfect harmony” The Line Of Best Fit
"intimate and enigmatic” PASTE
FEBRUARY 14 - sunnbrella - AKA London-based musician and producer David Zbirka - releases new single ‘have your say’ in the midst of a tour supporting cult Brooklyn indie outfit Beach Fossils.
Crafting self-styled ‘sun-bleached shoegaze’ / ‘chronically online pop’, sunnbrella leans heavily into the latter on his latest release. Glitchy electronics come to the fore across a track that explores the dichotomy of living in a metropolis - vast, impersonal and lonely but also inspiring, diverse and alive.
As David comments: “Lyrically, the song explores the loneliness and confusion of living in a big city, decrying the performative aspect of our social & professional lives - which are often intertwined, especially for so-called “creatives”. I’m very aware of my own engagement with this dynamic and the song is as much a critique of my own attitude as it is of the phenomenon at large.”
Falling in line with contemporary artists who blur genre boundaries, as well as iconic shoegaze forebears, sunnbrella has been compared to yeule, Slowdive, George Clanton, Jane Remover, TOKYOPILL amongst others. The evolution in sound on this single is aided by additional production and mixing from Athens based Czech electronic/experimental producer Oliver Torr.
Media acclaim has come from The Line Of Best Fit, PASTE, BBC London and more - and the initial vinyl run of acclaimed 2023 debut album Heartworn has sold out. Off the back of this record - produced by Patrick James Fitzroy (PVA, Sorry) - sunnbrella toured extensively across the UK and Europe, as well as playing showcase shows in New York and Montreal, and having high-profile support slots with the likes of No Rome (Dirty Hit).
Following the current Beach Fossils tour, they will also perform at Pohoda Festival in Slovakia, joining the likes of Queens of the Stone Age, Jockstrap, James Blake, Yaeji, Arlo Parks and many others on the line-up, with extra dates to be added throughout the year.
ABOUT sunnbrella
sunnbrella began as a lo-fi bedroom pop affair, initially garnering attention after releasing the single ‘Feelin’ Invisible’ – produced together with Eyedress. However David soon steered his artistic vision in a more sonically ambitious direction, effortlessly intertwining his love of ethereal shoegaze and dream pop with rhythmic, vintage-but-modern dance-music-inspired sounds, all underlined by a strong pop sensibility.
Beyond sunnbrella, David has traveled extensively as a drummer, performing in the UK, US, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Notable collaborations include touring with Golf Alpha Bravo, the solo project of Gabriel Winterfield from Jagwar Ma (supporting Angus Stone's project Dope Lemon) as well as Max Bloom (Yuck) and more recently London's dream-pop ensemble Drug Store Romeos on their UK tour in support of Belle & Sebastian.
