Whether in sports or pop culture, the roller skate is always worthy of a revival. Roller Derby is the name of both a feminist roller skating sport and inspired the name for the indie-pop trio from Hamburg founded in 2020, whose music bridges the gap between nostalgic, wavey 80s sounds and modern indie pop. Roller Derby was formed in early 2020 by Philine Meyer (vocals, keys), Manuel Romero Soria (guitar) and Max Nielsen (bass)
Philine Meyer's vocals float above warm synth sounds that spread throughout the room shining in dreaminess and wistfulness. Dreaming and dancing both find their place in Roller Derby's sound cosmos.
Their musical inspirations range from the 60s to the 80s, to current artists like Angel Olsen, Alvvays and Beach House. Their music is about longing for love and enduring loss, yet the music never loses its lightness.
In June 2021 Roller Derby played their first concert and by spring 2022, they had played SXSW, The Great Escape and their first London show at Moth Club.
