[ he/him ]
city: Belfast, South LondonToday, south London-based Irish songwriter and producer piglet (Charlie Loane) (he/him) shares a final track/video “the square” along with his new EP, for frank forever via Blue Flowers. The EP drops ahead of his UK headline tour starting November 12 in Oxford and ending in London at Corsica Studios on December 7. Full tour dates are below.
piglet’s art is rooted in his activism. Across the EP he offers hope and solidarity, interpreting his experiences through an anti-capitalist lens. Each verse in “the square” describes a different situation piglet has experienced while organising with a mutual aid group, and the end section attempts to outline the strands of his politics that each of these situations brought him to understand.
“the main point is that we will never achieve the change we need and deserve through legal or 'polite' means, let alone electoral politics,” piglet states.
“change will never come from the top down, it will not come from asking permission or appealing to those in power through facts, morals or logic - they see the effects of what they are doing - they just don't care. this has become clearer than ever to many people over the course of the escalated genocide being inflicted on Palestinians by the israeli occupation.”
Another imaginative one-take video shows why piglet has become known for the powerful imagery surrounding his music; “many people who until recently believed that the US and UK had some form of semblance of morality are now seeing that this is not, and has never been, the case. we burned the british and american flags at the end of this video to show our disgust with these nations over their continuous support for genocide (and a million other things tbh).
for frank forever EP is dedicated to piglet’s friend Frank (aka Trib) who completed suicide last summer. piglet says he finished writing these songs just before he passed away, and most of the lyrics on the EP developed from experiences they shared through organizing together as part of a mutual aid group. “mutual aid organising taught me so much about myself and the people around me,” piglet shares, “it laid bare the many ways that capitalism fails all of us, and brought me closer to the love which sustains us through this failure and builds in us the strength and motivation to fight for something better.”
The body of work comes after a summer of acclaimed collaborations with Tiberius b and Jemima Coulter, two celebrated artists in the trans-community. His 2022 EP seven songs garnered critical acclaim for its poignant exploration of the trans experience with songs like "it isnt fair" which highlighted the injustices faced by trans people in the British healthcare system. Its hard-hitting music video was directed by trans filmmaker Harv Frost, and as part of the EPs release piglet hosted a series of nights with performers from the community and its allies raising money for the We Exist charity.
piglet’s music has won him co-signs from Goat Girl (who he supported this summer), Porridge Radio (with whom he put out a split single) and members of caroline who played in his band for a session for NTS.
