About the new single:
Oh Bummer! says about his latest track: “Swimming” is a snapshot look at how it feels to be in the middle of a depressive episode and not see an end in sight. The deeper you sink, the farther away the light at the surface gets. It feels like a rock tied to your foot. It feels like the end of the world. It feels hopeless, alienating, and maybe even deserved. This is all wrapped in melancholy jazz guitar chords, 808's, and teenage angst. I still haven't learned how to swim, but at least for now, my head's above water.
About Oh Bummer!
What if BoywithUke had finger tattoos and some edge? What if Field Medic could rap? Oh Bummer! is the new musical project here to answer all of these questions and maybe even make us laugh while he’s doing it. Seattle-born, LA-based singer/songwriter Tanner Houghton (he/they) has been in punk bands, pop groups, and everything in between, but Oh Bummer! is his first musical solo endeavor. His prolific songwriting begins with the story-based simplicity of folk music, which he lines with casual, witty, and often self-deprecating lyrics about how he moves through the world, often just trying to get by. Tanner uses his listless vocals and intimate bedroom-pop delivery, blended with trip-hop inspired beats, to make sincere music for anyone who can relate to feeling like they don’t always fit in. According to Tanner, his songs are “a conglomeration of my depression and ADHD thoughts - the diary of an overthinker.”
Oh Bummer! debuted his unique sound combining his love of hip-hop, punk, and folk music on his first EP in 2022, Losing Sunlight, with singles like “Mirrors,” “Beautiful Day,” “Going Out of My Mind,” and “The Right Thing.” For his new EP, Tanner teamed up again with veteran producer The KickDrums (50 Cent, Kid Cudi, Machine Gun Kelly), and renowned horn player Kelly Pratt (David Byrne, Arcade Fire, Beirut) added flourishes that have become indicative of the project’s sound. One of the new tracks, “Listen Up” premiered on Under the Radar in June of 2023, and it will be followed by more music leading into next year. Oh Bummer!’s new EP, A Part of the World, is set for release on If This Then Records in early 2024.
