“Gentle psychedelic intimacy…nods to the sweeping, emotional crescendos of Arcade Fire” DIY
“Twinkling anthemia” So Young
“New Bangers” NME
“The winning combo of mournful contemplation paired with a soaring chorus” The New Cue
Manchester art-rockers Mewn announce ‘Such As This’ EP, set for release September 23rd, and share brand new single ‘There Is No Substitute’, out today (July 11th) via Simonie Records.
Bursting onto the scene in 2021 with acclaimed debut EP ‘Landscapes Unchanged’, the emerging quintet’s penchant for composing beautifully textured indie rock has already attracted plaudits from several key indie press champions (NME, DIY, So Young, The New Cue), as well as multiple spins across the BBC 6 Music airwaves (Lauren Laverne, Steve Lamacq, Stuart Maconie), not to mention helping them land a prestigious support slot alongside US giants The National at Manchester’s Mayfield Depot in August.
Taking inspiration from musical touchstones such as Timber Timbre, Arcade Fire, Big Thief, Nick Cave and Radiohead, the band’s supremely grand and multifaceted approach to both their songwriting and musicianship certainly sets them apart from many of their contemporaries, and with a series of festival slots lined up over the summer months, the spotlight is sure to grow even bigger.
Detailing their upcoming track release, frontman Daniel Bluer explained: “The first part of the song is a meditation on how our worlds and lives are shaped and influenced by others, the costs and benefits of that. The emotional intensity and urgency ramps up a lot in the second part. It has a feeling I relate to a lot, building up of heightened emotions and tension and racing towards this catharsis or release through whatever means possible. I hope the end of the song achieves this”.
Mewn’s ‘There Is No Substitute’ is out now via Simonie Records and will be available on all digital platforms.
Mewn are Daniel Bluer (guitar, vocals), Rachel Bell (guitar, backing vocals), Matthew Protz (keys), Daniel Cowman (drums), Tom Allen (bass)
