Gentle psychedelic intimacy…among the indie landscape, Mewn are doing something fairly singular” DIY
“Twinkling anthemia” So Young
“New Bangers” NME
“The winning combo of mournful contemplation paired with a soaring chorus” The New Cue
Manchester art-rockers Mewn share brand new single ‘Swell’, out today (September 27th), marking the final reveal from the band’s ‘Such As This’ EP, set for release October 7th via Simonie Records.
The follow-up to lead singles ‘Two Days’ and ‘There Is No Substitute’, ‘Swell’ showcases the emerging quintet’s unique ability for composing beautifully textured indie rock to perfection, having already attracted plaudits from several key indie press champions (NME, DIY, So Young, The New Cue, Rough Trade), and multiple spins across the BBC 6 Music airwaves (Lauren Laverne, Steve Lamacq, Stuart Maconie), not to mention helping them land a prestigious support slot alongside US giants The National in Manchester this summer.
Taking inspiration from musical touchstones such as Timber Timbre, Big Thief, Nick Cave and Radiohead, the band’s supremely grand and multifaceted approach to both their songwriting and musicianship certainly sets them apart from many of their contemporaries; with a series of festivals ticked off over the summer months (Manchester Psych Fest, Blue Dot) and more lined up this autumn, the spotlight is sure to grow even bigger.
Speaking ahead of their single release, frontman Daniel Bluer stated: "It’s about control and lack of it, hurtling around without the ability to change the direction. I sometimes feel like I’ve blinked and so much has transpired without much conscious decision making. Swell is a reflection on how this makes me feel"
Mewn’s ‘Swell’ is out now via Simonie Records and available on all digital platforms.
Mewn are Daniel Bluer (guitar, vocals), Rachel Bell (guitar, backing vocals), Matthew Protz (keys), Daniel Cowman (drums), Tom Allen (bass)
