Kill 'Em Charlie are a five piece indie rock band who hail from Cork, Ireland.
The band consists of Eoghan McGuigan (Vocals/Guitar), Alex Sheehan (Backing vocals, Guitar), Patrick Kirwan (Guitar), George Broadbank (backing vocals, Guitar) and Damon Walsh (Drums).
Alex, George, Patrick and a previous member started playing music together by doing Green Day covers in a garden shed in their school days. Around 2016, Eoghan was brought in on vocals and the band started to focus on writing original material. In 2019, Damon joined the band on drums and Kill ‘Em Charlie was officially born. This is when the band started to get into the craft and found their sound. The band have been gigging, recording and writing music non-stop ever since.
The band name came about in 2014, while performing covers and being originally called ‘The Detours’. The band then found out that there was a band with the same name so they went on a search for another. Singer, Eoghan McGuigan from the band suggested the name Kill ‘Em Charlie which he found from a Spider Man Comic.
Since forming the band have played shows in Cyprus Avenue in Cork, Dublin’s Whelans and Valley of Arts Festival in Tipperary.
With a reconfigured line up, they released their debut EP I Hope This Works for You ('Cause it Does for Me) in October of 2020. The band's ethos is "if we think it, we can write it".
Each song on their debut EP shows a different side of the band's personality as they want to get across how versatile they are with their sound and song writing attitude. The band's previous releases are a glimpse into their foundations and their influences. Their inspirations include the likes of Kings of Leon, Fontaines DC, Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand.
Their sound has been described as "sweet melodic goodness wrapped in a punchy indie array of sleekness". With the release of their single, Hazey in late 2021 and the live EP Live at Rebel Recordings in the summer of 2022, the band further built upon the foundations of their 2020 debut. They are now super excited they get to showcase how they have developed their sound and built on those foundations with their second upcoming studio EP No Ties To The Morning due to be released in Spring 2023. The band feel this is a definitive statement of where their sound has developed to this point and is a statement of intent going forward.
The first single off the new upcoming EP is titled Local High Roller and drops January 27th 2023 marking an exciting new year for the band as they hope to take their career a step further.
Lead single from ‘No Ties to the Morning’, Kill ‘Em Charlie's sophomore EP, ‘Local High Roller’ is a frenetic indie rock track taking its cues from early Kings of Leon and Arctic Monkeys. Lyrically the song revolves around its titular character - mainstay of any small town in Ireland and elsewhere, the chancer who thinks he runs things while being beloved widely when he’s anything but. The inspiration for the song reflects the band's own origins where they were all familiar with figures like that.
On the background of the song, the band state:
“The track came about one evening while we were practising. Eoghan started playing the main guitar line and everyone joined in what they felt was right for the song. We knew from the get-go that it would be an energetic song so we tried to stick to that vibe. By the end of practice, we had the first draft of the music for the song which has not changed much since. Eoghan then went away and wrote the lyrics and vocal melodies, getting inspiration from our own experiences as we mentioned above. Once the lyrics were done it was just a case of melding both together and the outcome was the song ‘Local High Roller’ as you hear it now.”
“The song was recorded at Claycastle, Youghal by producer Triss. It was our first time recording in this studio and Triss’ energy matched us incredibly well and he knew exactly what our vision for the song/EP was. Our old band member, Gavin Murray, was the mixing maestro for this song and EP. We previously worked with Gavin on our previous single ‘Hazey’ and, as Gavin used to be a former member, he really understands how we wanted the songs to sound. We could not be happier with the result of both the recording and mixing. Finally, the songs were mastered by Fergal Davis who has mastered most of our previous material so we also have a good trusting relationship with him.”
