Kill 'Em Charlie are a five piece indie rock band who hail from Cork, Ireland.
The band consists of Eoghan McGuigan (Vocals/Guitar), Alex Sheehan (Backing vocals, Guitar), Patrick Kirwan (Guitar), George Broadbank (backing vocals, Guitar) and Damon Walsh (Drums).
Alex, George, Patrick and a previous member started playing music together by doing Green Day covers in a garden shed in their school days. Around 2016, Eoghan was brought in on vocals and the band started to focus on writing original material. In 2019, Damon joined the band on drums and Kill ‘Em Charlie was officially born. This is when the band started to get into the craft and found their sound. The band have been gigging, recording and writing music non-stop ever since.
The band name came about in 2014, while performing covers and being originally called ‘The Detours’. The band then found out that there was a band with the same name so they went on a search for another. Singer, Eoghan McGuigan from the band suggested the name Kill ‘Em Charlie which he found from a Spider Man Comic.
Since forming the band have played shows in Cyprus Avenue in Cork, Dublin’s Whelans and Valley of Arts Festival in Tipperary.
With a reconfigured line up, they released their debut EP I Hope This Works for You ('Cause it Does for Me) in October of 2020. The band's ethos is "if we think it, we can write it".
Each song on their debut EP shows a different side of the band's personality as they want to get across how versatile they are with their sound and song writing attitude. The band's previous releases are a glimpse into their foundations and their influences. Their inspirations include the likes of Kings of Leon, Fontaines DC, Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand.
Their sound has been described as "sweet melodic goodness wrapped in a punchy indie array of sleekness". With the release of their single, Hazey in late 2021 and the live EP Live at Rebel Recordings in the summer of 2022, the band further built upon the foundations of their 2020 debut.
They are now super excited they get to showcase how they have developed their sound and built on those foundations with their second upcoming studio EP No Ties To The Morning due to be released in February 17th. The band feel this is a definitive statement of where their sound has developed to this point and is a statement of intent going forward.
The first single off the new upcoming EP is titled Local High Roller which dropped January 27th 2023 marking an exciting new year for the band as they hope to take their career a step further.
The track picked up support from the likes of The Last Mixed Tape, Corks Red FM, RTE 2XM, RTE Entertainment, HotPress, Golden Plec, Finbar Hoban, Cobra Promotions, Edgar Allan Poets, IMRO, 8RADIO and many more as well as gaining over 3,000 streams within the first week of its release making Kill ‘Em Charlie ones to watch for 2023 and a building a nice foundation ahead of their highly anticipated EP ‘No Ties To The Morning’ dropping this February.
To celebrate the release of the EP the band will be playing Cyprus Avenue in Cork on 17th Feb.
No Ties To The Morning’ is the sophomore EP from Tipperary indie rock outfit Kill ‘Em Charlie. The five tracks illustrate the continued growth in the band’s sound and increasing creative ambition. Thematically, the songs reflect the ebb and flow of a night out - tracking the lively anarchic energy through to the inevitable reflective comedown. Sonically the band expands upon the bright indie alt rock established on their debut release but they also venture into less familiar territory, adding heavier punishing riffs in places and melancholic melodies in others.
The band on behind the EP:
“Some of the songs on this EP have been kicking around for a while such as ‘Ciao Bella’ and ‘Oh No’. The benefit of this was we have tried and tested these songs with live audiences and so we could fine tune them. We would describe ourselves as a very melody driven band and these two songs in particular take a bit of a left turn from this and are a bit edgier which is partly the reason why we chose them to be on the EP. The other three songs (Local High Roller, Sundays Unwell, and Daydreaming) were written a short time before we began the recording process but we knew immediately that there was something special about these songs.
Eoghan’s lyricism throughout the whole EP is easily the most personal and expressive it has ever been. We hope for this reason that the EP resonates with our listeners as many people have their ups and downs, especially in the past couple of years. For the first time we also had guest artists be involved in the process which was a new experience for us. Previously, only the band members were involved in what was put on the record. Étáin Collins graced us with her wonderful vocals on a few tracks which also adds another aspect to our sound which no one has ever heard before. Additionally, we also had some friends join us for the recording process to help with group vocals as we really wanted to get across the boisterous experience of our live shows.
The songs were recorded at Claycastle (Youghal, Cork) by producer Triss. It was our first time recording in this studio and Triss’ energy matched us incredibly well and he knew exactly what our vision for the EP was. Our old band member, Gavin Murray, was the mixing maestro for the EP. We previously worked with Gavin on our previous single ‘Hazey’ and, as Gavin used to be a former member, he really understands how we wanted the songs to sound. Finally, the songs were mastered by Fergal Davis who has mastered most of our previous material so we also have a good trusting relationship with him. We could not be happier with the result of both the recording and mixing.”
Sunday's Unwell is the 4th track on Kill ‘Em Charlie’s latest EP ‘No Ties To The Morning’. The basis of the song has actually been floating around the frontman’s (Eoghan) brain for a long time. The main riff and hook were found buried in his iPhone from about 4 years ago while in the process of getting prepared to record this EP.
“We found the chunky chords, moody lyrics and main riff fit really well into the song selection we had already for ‘No Ties To The Morning’. Like most good things, it came together surprisingly quickly and it instantly became one of our favourites to play. It was finished and recorded within two weeks which shows how confident we are in the song itself. The song was layered up to support that main chord structure and riff with some cutting lead licks to make a hard hitting instrumental that seamlessly carries the sullen, almost despairing lyrics. We’re really proud of this track and hope it shows a maturity in our songwriting that we feel is becoming more and more apparent as we progress as a band.”
