Coinciding with an 8 date nationwide tour this January [full list of dates below], Berlin-via-Queensland singer/songwriter J Mahon shares fuzz-pop reflections on delusional adolescence with new single ‘Gold States’.
Delivering visions of an unattainable paradise with melancholic, deadpan irony, ‘Gold States’ breezes by with lo-fi crackles, driving acoustic guitars, ghostly bell chimes and melotron hums. Laced with Mahon’s typically effortless songsmithery - drawing from the likes of Sparklehorse and Sufjan Stevens - the track coasts by with all the fragile charm of the very ideals that lie at its core.
Recorded at London’s Haha sounds studio with Syd Kemp (Thurston Moore, Vanishing Twin) during the sessions for last year’s debut album Everything Has a Life, ‘Gold States’ sees Mahon reflect on the pains of young adulthood, as he himself elaborates:
"’Gold States’ is loosely based on growing up in North Queensland, Australia. This idea of wantingsomething greater than I had and if I had just found this special ‘Gold State’ than everything in my life would make sense and I would be who I was meant to be. Whether the ‘Gold State’ was a mental place, or a physical place it didn’t matter. As a teenager and into my early twenties I never felt like I fit in or had the same kind of confidence as others around me. I didn’t really even know who I was. It seemed like everyone I knew had some kind of identity and a certain trajectory to their life - but I felt like a kind of chameleon. Especially when it came to music and art it never made sense for me to stay in the same kind of genre or have one specific kind of image. In terms of writing songs i’m glad I am this way though, and in my personal life I have slowly found who I am.”
Raised in North Queensland, Australia, but now based in Berlin, Jarrod Mahon performed until 2023 under the moniker Emerson Snowe. Under this name, he, among other things, toured Australia with King Krule and home-recorded 5 albums and 13 EP’s until the need for an alter-ego no longer felt necessary. Relocating to Berlin, Mahon took the decision to move to Berlin and start life anew.
Releasing debut album ‘Everything Has A Life’ last September to acclaim from NME, Clash, So Young, BBC Radio 6 (Radcliffe and Maconie), Rough Trade, Still Listening, Blogotheque and Backseat Mafia, 2023 saw Mahon perform with Heartworms (for her landmark Village Underground headline), Ulrika Spacek, Tess Parks, Home Counties and Oscar Lang, also featuring at Rotterdam’s Left Of The Dial festival, and announce an 8 date tour of the UK, commencing 17th January 2024.
