Ahead of the release of his debut album Everything Has A Life on 8th September via Taxi Gauche Records, Berlin via Australia Singer-Songwriter J Mahon shares final album teaser, the blushing psych-ballad 'Charly (Romantic Heart)'
Drawing upon the likes of Sufjan Stevens and Sparklehorse, 'Charly (Romantic Heart)' offers an tear-jerking dam-burst of shimmering string swells, sun-gilt choruses and acoustic intimacies, shedding the burdens of a troubled past, and lilting gloriously towards the possibility of brighter futures.
Recorded at London's Ha Ha Sounds sutdio with Syd Kemp (Thurston Moore, Vanishing Twin) and featuring guest appearances from Magdalena Mclean on Violin (The Umlauts, Caroline) and Callum Brown on Drums (Ulrika Spacek), 'Charly' was written during a period Mahon spent sanding wood for 6-8 hours a day underneath a Upcycle work shop listening to Pavement and Paul McCartney, as Jarrod himself elaborates:
"Charly was written for my friend Charly in 2021. It’s loosely based around her and also my own feelings of when you begin a new relationship sometimes you can get so blinded by this new feeling that you can’t see the reality of the situations around it; thinking that you need to find another person to be with, when most of the time maybe it’s better to be on your own."
Raised in North Queensland, Australia, but now based in Berlin, Jarrod Mahon performed until very recently under the moniker Emerson Snowe - under which he home-recorded five albums and 13 EP’s, toured Australia with King Krule and Ariel Pink, and received backing from the likes of Clash, NME and DIY.
A persona born partly as a means of escape, Mahon started releasing under his own name earlier this year when such escape felt no longer necessary. Having received backing from So Young, BBC 6 Music and Blogotheque in 2023, recent months have seen Mahon earn support slots for Ulrika Spacek, Tess Parks and Flatworms in Europe, plus Home Counties and Oscar Lang in the UK.This October also sees him perforrm at Left of The Dial new music festival in Rotterdam.
Marrying his passion for Sufjan's Stevens' Illinois and the big band sounds of Neil Diamond, debut album 'Everything Has A Life' offers a trove of emotive riches as Mahon gloriously sings away the demons of his past. Locking into that bittersweet, quintessentially ‘pop’ combination of triumphant rhythms and confessional, stream-of-consciousness lyrics plucked straight from the heart, Mahon deliivers a banquet fit for an indie king: psych-pop lusciousness and anthemic glam fuzz; shambling flecks of country and lo-fi crepitations - the latter recalling those home-recorded demos that lie at the core of Mahon’s DIY creative process.
