Known for their eclectic mix of colour, chaos and catchiness, much-loved Australian (Naarm/Melbourne) outfit Fan Girl proudly return today with an explosive, mischievous, and incredibly catchy new single, ‘stupidstupid’.
stupidstupid’ is a song about a doomed relationship, an inevitable crumble, an almost comical disconnect between two people. As much as it feels like it’s going well, eventually it’s all going to fall apart. Sonically, the song is playful and angular, but still tows a strong line of darkness and chaos. Mostly chaos.
‘stupidstupid’ started as a glimmer of hope, an idea based around a monstrosity of chords at a frenetic pace, some wild woodwind, and a sticky vocal hook to hold on to throughout the rollercoaster.
The track was recorded at our studio, Taste Police HQ, and is blessed with the omnipresent, manic saxophone - played by the incredible Stu Patterson (The Empty Threats, Placement). After the song was deemed ‘complete’, it was telecommunicated to London, where Musical Mastermind™ Oli Barton-Wood (Nilüfer Yanya, Shame, Do Nothing) mixed it, heightening its powers to otherwise uncharted levels.
Felix Davis (Porridge Radio, Folly Group, The Murder Capital) then worked his magic mastering the track, and it is with great pleasure that it now lands here with you.
The release is paired with a ridiculous music video, dreamed up (and since regretted) by the band, and shot/directed by the brilliant Rick Clifford (@rcstills). In the words of the band, “a stupid song deserves a stupid video”.
The band are dropping a run of singles and an EP, culminating in a EU/UK tour in September/October 2024, and national AU touring throughout 2024.
With their most recent singles ‘american cowboy song’ + ‘falling’ + ‘react (react)’, Fan Girl have gained notable radio support both nationally & internationally via BBC Radio 1 (2 x Future Artists with Jack Saunders + Future Alternative with Nels Hylton), KEXP (World Premiere & 2 x Song Of The Day placements + multiple plays from Kevin Cole, Cheryl Waters, John Richards and more), multiple spins Radio X from John Kennedy, strong radio support from Triple J, FBi Radio, 2SER, Triple R, Edge Radio & PBS, as well as major DSP playlist adds including Spotify’s New Music Friday, Alt Here, All New Rock (INT), Local Noise & Fresh Finds and more, Apple’s New Music Daily, The Sound, Today’s Indie Rock and more, alongside press support from DIY MAG, Rolling Stone, Northern Transmissions, ALTANGLES, Pilerats, ToneDeaf, Clash & more. Recently, the band have played sold out single launches, toured the east coast of Australia, and supported the likes of Catfish & The Bottlemen, Ecca Vandal, Angie McMahon, The Vines & more.
Brandishing an unruly noise audible to the ends of the earth, Australian (Naarm/Melbourne) outfit Fan Girl present an eclectic mix of intensity, colour, chaos and catchiness. After the tragic passing of founding member Jack Wood, a total re-evaluation of their place in music, and a pandemic, Fan Girl are back with a wealth of exhilarating new music, coupled with their urgent, explosive live shows, and an ever growing appreciation for each other, life, & obnoxious guitar music.
