Nottingham indie newcomers Divorce share pop-infused second single ‘Pretty’, set for release May 31st via tastemaker London label Hand In Hive (TV Priest, Wyldest, Blackaby).
Following on from explosive and playful alt-country debut ‘Services’, with acclaim generated throughout the press landscape (DIY, So Young, The Line Of Best Fit, Clash), the band turn down a shadier fork in the road with latest effort ‘Pretty’.
‘Pretty’ is a personal statement from the perspective of headline, and what it means to be reduced to an act of desperation. This isn’t to say the lyrics are a lecture to those who choose to listen, rather a proclamation of devotion between two lovers with their heads in the pillory, unfazed by the bombardment of rotting vegetables.
Detailing their newest track ‘Pretty’, Felix Mackenzie-Barrow quotes: “The two characters in this song are holding onto each other despite scrutiny and humiliation. It’s a portrait of two tortured people set inside a makeshift ballad about preserving one pure thing in an insane world. This is the biggest love story since ‘Bee Movie’ (2007, Dreamworks).”
The band cite a wide range of influences such as LCD Soundsystem, Mitski, Big Thief and Tom Waits, as well as more off-beat choices including Americana band, The Felice Brothers.
From their very first show supporting label mates TV Priest, to a triumphant sold-out headline to end a debut UK tour in their home town of Nottingham, Divorce are making a name for themselves as a live force to be reckoned with. Mackenzie-Barrow and Cohen-Towell are a satisfying clash of vocal energy, a healthy dose of theatre, teetering unabashedly on the edge of uncool; a fashion-sense that they’ve defined as tra-chic.
The track was engineered, co-produced and mixed by Gavin Poole (Amusement Parks on Fire). Paired with a hilariously choreographed, unsettling video directed by acclaimed Nottingham director Michael Jobling.
With slots already ticked of alongside new label-mates Jemima Coulter, A.O. Gerber and Wyldest, the quartet are readying further live dates as they look to capitalise on their compelling introduction to the indie scene.
‘Pretty’ - the second single from Divorce - is out via Hand In Hive on May 31st.
Divorce are Tiger Cohen-Towell (Vocals, Bass), Felix Mackenzie-Barrow (Vocals, Electric Guitar), Adam Peter Smith (Electric Guitar) and Kasper Sandstrøm (Drums).
