Freshly signed to tastemaker London label Hand In Hive (TV Priest, Wyldest, Blackaby), Nottingham newcomers Divorce fizz into life with debut single ‘Services’ - set for release on February 1st.
‘Services’ is a compelling introduction to their alt-country and grunge-fuelled mission - teetering between the playful, the indulgent, and the volatile. A grimy bassline leads a lackadaisical groove, the basis for Tiger Cohen-Towell’s by turns airy, imperious and exasperated vocals. This is all the while disrupted by distorted guitar exclamations - the clash of loud and quiet exposing the duality between the two genre inspirations.
Thematically it tracks a fictional road trip punctuated by stops at grey, clinical service stations, and explores the shaky borders between adolescence in all its glorious excess, the weight of early adulthood, and the absurdity of life in a world turned on its head by late stage capitalism.
Vocalist and bassist Tiger elaborates: “Both teenage dysphoria and the reluctant ascent into the chaos of my mid-twenties meet each other in this track. I looked back on the suffocating boredom and the pain of being 16, and how I longed for the simplicity of human closeness and car journeys. I wanted to channel a zeitgeist that we all feel in touch with, pain, trauma and cacophonous emotion; summarised in the mundanity of a service station.”
Each member of the band has been a central and active participant in the Nottingham scene for years - most recently as members of post-punk risers Do Nothing, and Megatrain. Alongside these local reference points, the band cite a wide range of classic influences such as LCD Soundsystem, Mitski, Big Thief and Tom Waits, alongside more off-beat choices, such as Americana band The Felice Brothers.
Divorce have teamed up with Bristol-based production company Clump Collective to put together a 70’s inspired theatrical music video - adding a curious, absorbing visual component to an attention-grabbing first release.
Produced by Jamie Davies and Becca Mercer, ‘Services’ - the debut single from Divorce - is out via Hand In Hive on February 1st.
Divorce are Tiger Cohen-Towell (Vocals, Bass), Felix Mackenzie-Barrow (Vocals, Electric Guitar), Adam Peter Smith (Electric Guitar) and Kasper Sandstrøm (Drums).
