Riding high on appearances at The Great Escape and an extensive UK/EU headline tour, Brighton-based feminist electro-punk trio CLT DRP are delighted to announce that they will release their second album Nothing Clever, Just Feelings on 8th September 2023 via Venn Records (Bob Vylan, Witch Fever, Meryl Streek).
To celebrate the news, the band are releasing their new single and album title track ‘Nothing Clever, Just Feelings’ which is out now on all good digital services, and have also just been announced to support Gary Numan in Antwerp.
“This is the title track for a reason!” says vocalist Annie Dorrett of the new single. “Desperation, anger, confusion—ALL the feelings. I think I spent a lot of time when I was younger trying to be clever about lyrics. I wanted to try and be witty or something ‘mature’. As a younger woman in the industry, I felt like I wasn’t going to be taken seriously writing the way I did. I quickly realised that the music I listen to the most is nothing like that, so why would I try and emulate something I don’t even listen to? The lyrics I connect with are always straight forward emotions or familiar scenarios that I can identify right away when I first hear a song. Being present in the lyrics and emotions are important to me as a lyricist. I want you in the car with your friends screaming the lyrics at full blast cursing your ex! That’s what this song is supposed to do.”
The official video for the song was directed by Harry Steel at Haunted Mattress, who also directed the ‘NEW BOY’ visuals. “We shot the entire thing in a day, which kinda helped capture the manic energy we wanted to convey in the video,” says Dorrett. “Harry did a really great job with what he had in making the shots match the feel of the music. It’s so special being able to create something in a comfortable space, especially when you’re not 100% at ease being in front of the camera. Being on stage is one thing; being in front of the camera I historically hate, actually. I think all three of us feel similar about it. So cheers to Abi and Harry for helping us all feel reassured and capturing the buzz we have when playing live!”
Showcasing CLT DRP’s unique position at the cutting edge of electronic, noise-infused music, Nothing Clever, Just Feelings seamlessly merges various genres to create a unique sound that is both exhilarating and reflective. Focused on themes of queerness and heartbreak, each track explores the raw emotions that come along with these lived experiences, delivering a personal and poignant message at every turn—newfound feminism in vulnerability and gender fluidity; newfound femininity in humour and the fear of being alone.
Commenting on the record, Dorrett says: “Overall, this album embodies our true ethos of self-expression. Equally chaotic and hypnotic, it was meant to be blasted in the car at full volume while you curse your ex, your past ghosts, and you celebrate your cherished independence while you have it.”
‘Nothing Clever, Just Feelings’ is the second track to be taken from the album, following on from lead single ‘NEW BOY’ which was released earlier this year and picked up support from Kerrang! Magazine, Total Guitar, Guitar World, UPSET, Louder Than War, Noizze, Get In Her Ears, Loud Women and more.
Radio support has been rolling in for the new material from Marc Riley, Tom Robinson and Steve Lamacq at BBC 6music, John Kennedy at Radio X, Jamz Supernova on The Selector, and Melita Dennett at BBC introducing.
Streaming platforms have been equally enthusiastic, with support from Spotify’s official Misfits 2.0 and All New Punk playlists, Amazon’s Breakthrough Rock, and Deezer’s ASAP Rock.
The band have recently appeared alongside Alice Glass and Tokky Horror and put in some typically chaotic and turbo-charged live appearances at Takedown Festival and The Great Escape, recently announcing a run of UK and German summer live dates and festival appearances including ArcTanGent, Best Kept Secret (NL), and Wrong Fest (Bulgaria) with further live dates TBA (see below for listings).

Leading to support slots with some of the most vital and exciting alternative bands on the live circuit including JOHN, Saint Agnes, Clipping, Svalbard, Witch Fever, Heriot, Tokky Horror, De Staat and Warmduscher, their early success saw the band appear at a host of festivals including Strangeforms, PORTALS, Tredfest and more.
CLT DRP’s subsequent 2021 standalone single ‘Ownership’ picked up praise from Kerrang! Magazine, was made John Kennedy’s X-Posure Hot One on Radio X, and also enjoyed support from Spotify’s The Punk List, Fresh Finds: Rock, and Post Punk 2k playlists.
By 2022 the band were being hailed as one of the most abrasive, innovative new artists in the UK, and most-recent singles ‘TORX’ and ‘Aftermath’ saw them collaborate with New York’s FLOSSING (Brace Yourself Records)—landing hot on the Radio X Xposure Evening Playlist, the material marked a further evolution of their eclectic, experimental approach to fusing electronic and punk music in boundary breaking fashion.
